This information was given by Mr. Asbjørn Warvik Rørtveit, Southeast Asia regional director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, at the " Salmon Academy" event (part of the Vietfood & Beverage - Propack Vietnam 2023 Exhibition) taking place on the afternoon of November 8.

According to Mr. Asbjørn, in September 2023 alone, Vietnam spent about 23.7 million USD to import nearly 9,000 tons of seafood (salmon, cod, king crab, brown crab,...) from Norway.

According to statistics, from the beginning of the year until now, Vietnam has spent 142 million USD to import a total of more than 42,000 tons of aquatic and seafood products from the above country. This figure increased by about 8% in volume and 23% in value compared to the same period last year, accounting for about 10% of the total value of aquatic and seafood products exported by Norway in the first 9 months of the year.

"This shows that consumer demand is increasing, along with the population size and the increase in income of Vietnamese consumers . Therefore, Vietnam is an attractive market for Norwegian seafood exporters," said Mr. Asbjørn.

Sharing about the sustainable development experience of the Norwegian seafood industry, Mr. Asbjørn affirmed that Norway puts responsible marine resource management at the core, moving from unlimited fishing to strict regulations and setting standards for sustainable management of marine resources.

“Our goal is not only to provide consumers with high-quality and reliable seafood, but also to promote cooperation in protecting marine ecosystems, contributing to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the seafood industry,” said Mr. Asbjørn.

At the event, celebrity chef Jimmy Chok from Singapore shared the art of preparing salmon to retain the maximum amount of fish meat, explored cooking methods and discussed effective ways to preserve fresh or frozen salmon.

In 9 months, Vietnam exported only 4.8 million USD worth of seafood to Norway.

Statistics from the General Department of Customs show that in the first 9 months of this year, the value of Vietnam's seafood exports to Norway reached nearly 4.8 million USD.

In 2022, Vietnam's seafood exports to Norway reached about 10 million USD. In the opposite direction, Vietnam spent about 260 million USD to import seafood from Norway.

At the Norway - Vietnam Workshop: Opportunities for cooperation in the field of aquaculture, organized by the Norwegian Embassy in Vietnam and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in early 2023, representatives of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) hoped that Norway would create conditions for more Vietnamese seafood products to be exported.

"In marine aquaculture, Vietnam still has some shortcomings in infrastructure, breeds, feed and especially farming technology, so productivity and economic efficiency are not high.

"We request Norway to support Vietnam's marine farming industry in the coming time, especially hoping that Norway will support marine farming technology and techniques," said a VASEP representative.
