Attack on Aviatorskoye airbase
In recent days, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have intensified their air strikes against Ukrainian military positions, and one of the attacks that has received attention over the past week was a large-scale attack on the Aviatorskoe Air Base in the Dnepropetrovsk region. According to Russian sources, the attack destroyed or damaged aviation equipment located at the base. The air defense system protecting the airport was also destroyed.
The first attack on the Aviatorsky airbase was carried out on April 18. As a result of the airstrike, three MiG-29 fighters and four An-26 military transport aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force were destroyed. An S-300 air defense complex was also destroyed as a result of a precise Russian strike.
According to AVP, these attacks were carried out by Iskander OTRK missiles with cluster warheads and conventional warheads. However, despite the Russian attacks, a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet remained at Aviatorsky and even took off.
Then, on April 19, Russian forces launched a second attack on the airbase. The attack resulted in the destruction of the remaining MiG-29. This Russian attack also destroyed an additional S-300PT air defense missile launcher and the latest Pelican radar.
Weakening strategy
The Aviatorskoye air base, which has caused a lot of trouble for the Russian military, has been shut down. In two days, the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost four MiG-29 fighters, two S-300 complexes and a Pelican radar. This comes amid complaints from Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky about the lack of aviation and air defense systems.
It should be noted that in March and April, the number of effective missile strikes increased sharply. Among the Ukrainian air defense systems destroyed by the Russian military were Western air defense systems. The figures for Ukraine's losses in recent days show that the Russian Armed Forces continue to operate actively, carrying out precision strikes against a wide range of enemy military targets. Such actions are part of the overall strategy of the Russian military to weaken the military potential of Ukraine and achieve political goals.
Yet despite the Russian military’s increased attacks on high-value targets, Ukraine still has a significant number of combat aircraft. According to various estimates, Kiev has at least six additional Su-25 attack aircraft, about a dozen MiG-29 and Su-27 fighters, and at least six Su-24 frontline bombers.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will receive US F-16 fighter jets in the coming weeks, which will enhance Kyiv's offensive capabilities.
