8,990 people died in traffic accidents in 10 months of 2024

Traffic accidents, natural disasters, and fires took the lives of nearly 10,000 people in the first 10 months of 2024.

According to the General Statistics Office, in October (from September 26 to October 25, 2024), there were 1,850 traffic accidents nationwide, killing 896 people and injuring 1,347 people.

Compared to September 2024, the number of traffic accidents increased by 5.1%; the number of deaths decreased by 1.1%; the number of injuries increased by 7.6%.

Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of traffic accidents decreased by 7.5%; the number of deaths decreased by 1.6%; the number of injuries decreased by 11.3%.

In the first 10 months of 2024, there were 19,513 traffic accidents nationwide, killing 8,990 people and injuring 14,505 people. Compared to the same period last year, the number of traffic accidents increased by 5.7%; the number of deaths decreased by 8.4%; the number of injuries increased by 13.9%.

On average, every day in the first 10 months of 2024, there were 64 traffic accidents nationwide, killing 30 people and injuring 48 people.

Damage caused by natural disasters in October was mainly due to the impact of heavy rain, floods and inundation. There were 14 deaths, 33 injuries; 777 houses collapsed, washed away and damaged; 9,600 livestock and poultry died; 2,800 hectares of rice and crops were flooded and damaged; the total value of property damage caused by natural disasters in the month was VND235.4 billion, down 77.2% compared to the same period last year.

In the first 10 months of this year, natural disasters left 525 people dead and missing, 2,136 people injured; 26,200 houses collapsed and damaged; 5.1 million livestock and poultry died; 90,300 hectares of crops and 334,200 hectares of rice were flooded and damaged; the total value of property damage was estimated at VND 78,082.4 billion, 21.2 times higher than the same period in 2023.

During the month (from September 18 to October 17, 2024), there were 282 fire and explosion incidents nationwide, killing 4 people and injuring 8 people, causing an estimated loss of VND 150.7 billion, 2.2 times higher than the previous month and nearly 8 times higher than the same period last year. In the first 10 months of this year, there were 3,475 fire and explosion incidents nationwide, killing 89 people and injuring 95 people, causing an estimated loss of VND 368.1 billion, down 3.1% over the same period last year.

Also during the above period, the authorities discovered 1,940 environmental violations in 51/63 localities, of which 1,831 cases were handled with a total fine of VND 29.8 billion, up 46.0% compared to the previous month and up 12.8% compared to the same period last year. In the first 10 months of this year, the authorities discovered 19,282 environmental violations, of which 17,683 cases were handled with a total fine of VND 254.5 billion, up 4.4% compared to the same period last year.
