Train travel remains popular in many countries around the world , with some trains operating for centuries still attracting passengers today.
Long-distance train journeys take travelers through diverse landscapes and weather conditions. Below are six of the world's longest train routes, each lasting at least 50 hours.
Chicago to the San Francisco Bay Area, USA
Amtrak's California Zephyr is a 3,923 km long train journey that takes 51 hours across the United States. The journey begins in Chicago, Illinois, and ends in San Francisco, California. Amtrak's California Zephyr website describes it as "one of the most beautiful train journeys" in North America.

Passengers on the train can admire many famous natural landscapes such as the Rocky Mountains in North America and Gore Canyon in Colorado in the central United States. These places are likened to a snow-covered wonderland during the winter months.
Train fares vary depending on the chosen route and departure station. Children under two years old travel free. Children aged two to 12 years old receive a 50% discount on all onboard services.
Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari, India
This train, called the Vivek Express, runs from Dibrugarh in northern India to Kanyakumari in southern India. It is India's longest railway line in terms of both distance and travel time. The total length of the line is 4,154 km, with stops at 58 stations.

Sydney to Perth, Australia

Beyond the seascape, the train also passes through many Australian landscapes such as mountain ranges, deserts, gold mines, rocky valleys, and subtropical grasslands. This journey also includes the world's longest straight railway line – the Trans-Australian Railway through the Nullarbor Plain.
Toronto to Vancouver, Canada
This journey takes travelers through famous Canadian landmarks including the Rocky Mountains and the Laurentian Highlands. If lucky, travelers may spot wildlife such as deer and bears as the train passes through the Laurentian Highlands. The journey is approximately 4,460 km long, takes 4 days, and operates twice a week. There are three classes of seating for passengers to choose from: economy, premium (sleeper plus), and business (prestige).
Moscow to Vladivostok, Russia
This is a 100-year-old railway line across Siberia, spanning 9,289 km and taking 7 days and 7 nights to travel. The railway journey crosses eight time zones, allowing travelers to witness the constantly changing landscapes and weather.

This railway line also has two other sections: one across Mongolia and the other across Manchuria (China). The railway system is being expanded to connect with North Korea and also Tokyo, Japan.
