In the first 5 months of 2023, the number of international tourists increased by more than 500%

In the first 5 months of 2023, Cambodia welcomed about 2.1 million international tourists , an increase of more than 500% over the same period in 2022.

At a recent meeting between the Royal Government and the private sector working group to promote the recovery of Cambodia's tourism industry, the country's Tourism Minister Thong Khon said that in the first five months of this year, destinations across the country welcomed about 10 million domestic visitors and about 2.1 million international visitors, an increase of 530.5%.

The leading countries in terms of number of tourists to Cambodia are Thailand, Vietnam and China.

According to Mr. Thong Khon, in 2023, Cambodia is expected to welcome about 4 million international tourists and at least 16 million domestic tourists.

This figure is in line with the forecast in the roadmap of the plan to promote the recovery of Cambodia's tourism industry during and after the Covid-19 crisis.

Accordingly, it is expected that the Southeast Asian country's tourism industry will take about 5 years to recover and welcome the number of international visitors to the same level as before the Covid-19 pandemic, that is, in 2025 or 2026.

To achieve this goal, Cambodia is developing a National Strategic Plan for Tourism Development for the period 2023-2035 to promote tourism recovery during and after the Covid-19 crisis.

Cambodia's draft National Strategic Plan for Tourism Development 2023-2035 sets out three goals and 10 strategic solutions.

It focuses on five main contents: developing innovative and creative tourism products with Cambodian identity; marketing and promoting tourism; strengthening quality and safety in the tourism sector; building supporting infrastructure to connect, facilitate travel activities and promote Cambodian identity in the tourism sector.
