Regarding the Vietnamese team, the homepage of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said: "The best achievement of the Vietnamese team in the World Cup qualifiers is reaching the third qualifying round. Their current goal is to surpass the above achievement. The Vietnamese team is currently ranked 94th in the world, they are in Group F of the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia.
In Group F, in addition to the Vietnamese team, there are also the Philippines, Iraq and Indonesia. The Vietnamese and Philippine teams will face each other in the opening match on November 16, at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila (Philippines).
Regarding the match between Vietnam and the Philippines, the Asian Football Confederation's homepage commented: "The Vietnamese team will carry their goal of passing the second qualifying round to Manila, where the Philippines team (ranked 138th in the world) is waiting for the Vietnamese team.
The Philippines is making its sixth appearance in the World Cup qualifiers. In the last three qualifying rounds, the Azkals (the Philippines’ nickname) were eliminated in the second round. The upcoming match will be their 13th time facing Vietnam.

The second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia will take place from November 16, 2023 to June 11, 2024. The top two teams in each group of the second qualifying round (there are a total of 9 groups) will qualify for the third qualifying round.
From the third qualifying round, Asian teams have a chance to qualify for the World Cup finals.
