5,239 kg of used pesticide packaging collected

According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Tri, in order to effectively implement the environmental criteria in the National Target Program on New Rural Development, in recent times, the agricultural sector has promoted propaganda and guided localities in collecting and building tanks to collect used pesticide packaging in the fields. Up to now, the whole province has had 4,500 tanks to collect used pesticide packaging, an increase of more than 1,000 tanks compared to 2023.

The number of used pesticide packages collected in 2024 was 5,239 kg. The number treated was 5,133 kg, the rest is remaining in tanks installed in the fields. The treatment method is that the District People's Committee contracts with specialized units such as: Asia Environmental Production, Trade and Service Company Limited, Nghe An Environmental Treatment Joint Stock Company... to collect, transfer, transport and treat according to regulations on hazardous waste.

However, compared to the cultivated land area, the number of tanks above still does not meet the regulations. Specifically, with 25,000 hectares of rice land, about 8,000 tanks are needed, but currently there are only 4,500 tanks, not meeting the collection needs during the production process.

In addition, the planning, investment, and arrangement of collection points, treatment and disposal of used pesticide packaging in the province have not been implemented synchronously. Localities have not really paid attention to the construction of tanks for storing used pesticide packaging in the fields because the funding for the construction of tanks is too low, and the annual budget for implementing guidelines for the collection and disposal of used pesticide packaging is limited.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hong Phuong, in the coming time, the agricultural sector will continue to open training courses to guide farmers on the safe and effective use of pesticides. Coordinate with localities to guide the collection of used pesticide packaging; build sample tanks in localities to propagate to people to raise awareness of environmental protection in agricultural production.

At the same time, coordinate with relevant units to organize inspections of the use of pesticides and fertilizers according to the provisions of law, strictly handle violations of the use of pesticides and fertilizers at crop production facilities.
