On the morning of May 19, after weighing and selling lychees to a clean food store chain in Hanoi at 90,000 VND/kg, Mr. Nguyen Van Hien - Director of Hop Duc HD Agricultural Service Cooperative (Thanh Ha, Hai Duong), said that this specialty fruit has begun its harvest season.
The lychee acreage of Hop Duc HD Cooperative is up to 280 hectares. Of which, there are white egg-shaped lychees, spiny egg-shaped lychees, pink lychees, hybrid lychees and main-season lychees. At this time, only white egg-shaped lychees and spiny egg-shaped lychees are about to be harvested.
"Because it's the beginning of the harvest season, lychee prices are extremely expensive. Shops and supermarkets have to line up to buy," he said. Today is the fourth day the cooperative has harvested white egg-shaped lychees. This type of lychee costs 90,000 VND/kg wholesale at the garden, while beautiful egg-shaped lychees cost 45,000-47,000 VND/kg.

The output of these types of lychees is not much, while the wholesale demand from supermarkets and stores is very large. Up to now, there are 6 units registered to buy lychees from the Cooperative, but the amount of lychees harvested each day is only enough to sell to 3 units, the rest have to wait.
White egg lychee is the most expensive type of lychee. Last year, one sao of white egg lychee brought in about 29 million VND in revenue. That means 1 hectare brings in about 800 million VND. However, white egg lychee only accounts for about 15% of the cooperative's lychee growing area. Pink egg lychee and thorny egg lychee account for 70%, hybrid lychee and main-season lychee account for 15%, he shared.
In the market, some stores are selling white eggplant at prices ranging from 145,000-180,000 VND/kg depending on the type. Meanwhile, the pink eggplant costs about 80,000-120,000 VND/kg.
Speaking to VietNamNet reporter, Ms. Hoang Thi Thuy Ha, Vice Chairman of Thanh Ha District People's Committee, said that the lychee growing area in the district this year is about 3,265 hectares, with an estimated output of 40,000 tons, of which early lychee tea is 25,000 tons and main crop lychee is 15,000 tons.
Early lychee tea harvest time begins in the second half of May, while main-season lychee tea begins in the second half of June this year.
According to Ms. Ha, Thanh Ha litchi is produced according to VietGAP standards, with more than 500 hectares certified to meet GAP and GlobalGAP standards. In 168 growing areas meeting export standards, farmers strictly implement export production processes under the supervision of local authorities, district and provincial professional agencies.
Therefore, Thanh Ha litchi in the export growing area meets the quality, requirements and import standards in the international market.
This lychee crop, the district determined that China is still the main market, followed by the domestic market. In addition, it strives to boost exports to other high-end markets.
Currently, there are two joint ventures producing lychees for export to high-end markets such as Japan, the US, the Netherlands, Australia, and Thailand. In addition, many supermarkets and clean agricultural product stores have registered to purchase lychees for domestic consumption, Ms. Ha said.
