4 types of colds that should not be ignored because they can become serious

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên09/11/2024

There are hundreds of different cold viruses. They all cause similar symptoms such as runny nose, stuffy nose, cough, sneezing, mild headache, low-grade fever... Some viruses can cause severe symptoms.

Cold viruses are especially easy to develop and spread during the changing seasons of the year. The illness usually only lasts from 7 to 10 days. However, in some cases, such as children, the elderly or people with weak immune systems, the illness can last longer or even progress to severe, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Cough is one of the common symptoms of a cold.

Although there are more than 200 viruses that cause colds, most cases of colds are caused by four viruses.

Rhinovirus

Studies show that colds caused by rhinoviruses account for about 50% of all colds worldwide. Rhinoviruses thrive and spread rapidly in early fall and spring in schools and offices.

People usually have mild symptoms. However, rhinovirus can cause ear infections, sinus infections, and other respiratory problems, especially in people with asthma.

Coronavirus

About 15% of colds are caused by coronaviruses. These viruses tend to spread more widely in the winter. Colds caused by coronaviruses can lead to life-threatening problems, such as pneumonia, especially in people with weakened immune systems. In these cases, people need to be hospitalized.

Enterovirus

Enteroviruses are a group of more than 300 different viruses, including coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, and polioviruses. Many of these viruses can cause colds and other respiratory problems. Others can cause meningitis or hand, foot, and mouth disease.

Adenovirus

Adenoviruses cause cold symptoms that last longer than rhinoviruses. Many adenovirus infections can take weeks or even months to clear. They develop and spread year-round, but are more common in early winter and spring. Studies show that adenoviruses are easily spread in daycare centers, hospitals, and schools.

While it’s impossible to completely prevent a cold, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of getting sick. These include avoiding close contact with people who are sick, avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces. Additionally, regular vitamin D and zinc supplements can help boost your immune system and reduce your risk of infection, according to Healthline .
