3am, people huddled in the cold rain waiting to buy gold for God of Wealth

Gold shops only open for business at 6:30 a.m., but since 3 a.m. many people have been lining up, sitting huddled in the cold, rainy weather in Hanoi to buy gold for luck on God of Wealth Day.

For more than ten years now, every year on the God of Wealth's day (the 10th day of the first lunar month), thousands of people have flocked to gold shops to buy this precious metal to pray for luck and prosperity.

Accordingly, at gold shops on Tran Nhan Tong Street (Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi), from early morning until late at night, they are always crowded with people coming to make transactions.

Early this morning (February 7), although the stores did not open until 6:30, from 3:00 there were already dozens of people sitting huddled in the cold rain waiting to buy gold for the God of Wealth.

“For many years, on the day of the God of Wealth, I have been buying gold for luck. I don’t buy much, just 2-3 taels each year,” Pham Huy Quyet in Hoang Mai (Hanoi) shared with VietNamNet. Today, despite the rain and cold weather, Quyet still woke up early, rode his motorbike to the gold shop at 3am and waited for the shop to open.

Similarly, Mr. To Hoa Binh in Hai Ba Trung (Hanoi) also sat in front of the gold shop from 3am. He said: “I am a retired official, not doing any business. Buying gold on the day of God of Wealth has become my habit for more than ten years now.”

On the God of Wealth Day last year, Mr. Binh bought 2 taels of gold. This year, he brought 34 million VND with him, planning to buy 3 taels of gold rings. "It's all my pension savings, so buying gold is considered a savings," Mr. Binh said.

"The price of gold is only about 9 million VND/tael, but I have a few million VND left over just in case the price of gold increases, so I have enough money to buy it," Mr. Binh added.

Mr. Binh also revealed that he almost never sells the gold he buys on this day, but keeps it as "savings".

He remembers that there were some gold bars that he bought when the price was 2.23 million VND/tael and still keeps until now. In fact, the price of that amount of gold has increased 4 times. And the 2 gold bars that he bought last year for nearly 6.8 million VND now are quite a profit.

At Bao Tin Minh Chau gold shop on this street, while handing out gold purchase vouchers, the staff reminded customers to have their ID cards ready or open the VniD app on hand for convenient transactions.

The loudspeaker also continuously broadcasts: "Today's gold ring price is 86.4-89.55 million VND/tael".

Some gold brands said that the amount of gold bars and gold rings prepared for this year’s God of Wealth festival has decreased compared to the same period last year. However, the amount of gold sold will not be limited.

Many products are predicted to "sell out" early on God of Wealth day due to scarce supply.
