20 years of implementing Phu Quoc development project: Growth of nearly 20% per year

(Chinhphu.vn) - On the morning of March 31, in Phu Quoc city, Kien Giang province, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended a conference to summarize Decision 178/2004/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister approving the overall development project of Phu Quoc island until 2010 and vision to 2020.

The conference was organized by the People's Committee of Kien Giang province. Also attending the conference were General Le Hong Anh, former member of the Politburo, former Standing member of the Secretariat; members of the Party Central Committee: Deputy Head of the Central Organizing Committee, Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra, Minister of Justice Le Thanh Long, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung, Minister of Construction Nguyen Thanh Nghi, Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh, Senior Lieutenant General Le Huy Vinh, Deputy Minister of National Defense, Secretary of the Kien Giang Provincial Party Committee Do Thanh Binh, leaders of ministries, branches, localities, experts, scientists, and enterprises.

Previously, on March 30, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh surveyed the actual situation to solve urgent, fundamental, and long-term issues for Phu Quoc to develop quickly and sustainably.

The Prime Minister and the delegation visited Phu Quoc Martyrs' Cemetery, offered incense at Phu Quoc Heroes and Martyrs Memorial Temple (in Duong Dong ward) and surveyed 9 locations in Phu Quoc: Construction site of President Ho Chi Minh's statue; Phu Quoc International Passenger Port construction investment project; Phu Quoc International Airport; Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc semi-wild animal care and conservation park; Phu Quoc Medical Center; EHL - Phu Quoc Tourism and Hotel Vocational College; proposed construction site of Phu Quoc Waste Treatment Plant in Cua Duong commune; Duong Dong freshwater reservoir; Hon Thom sea tourism, resort and entertainment complex with an investment scale of 50,000 billion VND.

Many indicators increased dozens, hundreds of times after 20 years.

According to the People's Committee of Kien Giang province, after nearly 20 years of implementing Decision No. 178/2004/QD-TTg, the appearance of the "island city" has had many positive changes.

Economic growth rate is always high, reaching nearly 19.6%/year, stable and sustainable, each year is higher than the previous year; most socio-economic indicators increase, economic structure shifts in the right direction, rapidly increasing the proportion of trade-services, construction industry, and decreasing agriculture.

The total state budget revenue has increased over the years, contributing greatly to the province's general budget. If in 2004 the total budget revenue only reached 38.59 billion VND, not enough to cover expenses, in 2020 it accounted for 51.6% of the total budget revenue of Kien Giang province and contributed 5.4% of the budget revenue of the Mekong Delta region, 0.35% of the total budget revenue of the whole country. By 2023, the budget revenue reached 7,812.7 billion VND, an increase of over 113 times compared to 2004. In the past 5 years, Phu Quoc has not only been self-sufficient in budget but also regulated the provincial budget.

From a locality with "no investment projects", by 2023, it had attracted 321 investment projects with a land use area of about 10,652 hectares, a total registered investment capital of over 412 trillion VND, accounting for 42.8% of the total number of projects in the province, of which 312 projects had been granted Investment Registration Certificates and investment policy decisions with a total area of 10,111 hectares.

Phu Quoc has 4,404 enterprises with registered capital of over 142 trillion VND, a 17-fold increase in quantity and a 383-fold increase in registered capital compared to 2004.

Total social investment in basic construction has continuously increased every year, reaching 21,615 billion VND by 2023, an increase of nearly 64 times compared to 2004.

The outstanding achievement is in tourism development, from a little-known island district, in 2004 attracting only over 130 thousand tourists, by 2020 it reached over 3.5 million, an increase of nearly 27 times compared to 2004, and exceeding nearly 17% compared to the target in Decision 178/2004/QD-TTg, of which international visitors were over 160 thousand, accounting for 4.2% of the country (in 2020 the country welcomed 3.8 million international visitors).

By the end of 2023, Phu Quoc will welcome about 5.57 million tourists, an increase of 42.7 times compared to 2004; of which international visitors will be over 560 thousand, accounting for 4.48% of the country (in 2023, the country will welcome 12.8 million international visitors).

Phu Quoc has affirmed its brand on the world tourism map, with many tourism products of regional and international stature. In 2023, the world's leading travel magazine Travel + Leisure honored Phu Quoc Island as "One of the new stars of Vietnam tourism"....

Up to now, Phu Quoc's infrastructure system has basically met the development requirements. In 2014, Phu Quoc officially connected to the national grid. In the same year, Phu Quoc International Airport welcomed its first flight; to date, domestic flights have been connected to all airports, and international flights have been connected to 10 countries and territories.

The cultural and social fields have been given due attention and direction, the traditional cultural values of the locality have continued to be preserved and promoted; the income and living standards of the people have been continuously improved. In 2004, there were only 2 kindergartens and 24 general schools, but now the city has 106 schools of all levels. The health care work of the people has been given attention, the health sector has been strengthened in terms of both the number of medical staff and facilities.
