La Hoang Tien (born in 2007) was recently admitted to Vassar College, one of the country's leading liberal arts universities, with a scholarship of 8.6 million VND.

“During the early admission round, I applied to 8 American universities. Vassar College was the first school to announce the results and is also my favorite school. In particular, the financial support of 8.6 billion VND for 4 years of study was unexpected good news for me,” Tien expressed her happiness.

Le Hoang Tien is currently a student in class 12A1, Foreign Language High School (Hanoi). As a lover of music and art, since grade 4, the female student tried to enter the Vietnam National Academy of Music and was admitted to the Piano major, 9-year professional intermediate program.

At this time, she was faced with two choices: continue studying culture or focus on the path of art. "I want to become a real artist, to stand on stage and perform, but I also realize that I have the ability in academics. In the end, I decided to choose to pursue both," Tien said.

At first, maintaining her studies at two schools was quite difficult for the female student. To balance, Tien made her own schedule, fixing piano practice for about 2 hours/day. Cultural studies and other activities would be arranged in the remaining time.

Despite the tight schedule and the pressure of studying at two schools at the same time, Tien still achieved a series of excellent achievements: Second prize in the city's excellent student competition in English in grade 9, Third prize in the excellent student competition in the Coastal and Northern Delta region in grade 10, Third prize in the High School Olympic competition of Hanoi National University.

In addition, 10X won first prize at the Singapore International Piano Competition 2022, IELTS 8.0, SAT score of 1,540/1,600, in the top 1% of candidates with the highest scores in the world.

Entering high school, the Hanoi female student began to think about studying abroad in fields related to music and art to develop her strengths. At the beginning of grade 11, the 10X officially started to prepare her application.

Vassar College, where she applied, required each student to write a major essay, a minor essay, and a creative piece. After many changes in topic ideas, Tien decided to write about traditional cultural experiences, from the quintessential beauty to unhealthy habits.

“I realize that what we see is often just the surface of culture, behind it there are still many controversial things. Therefore, I want to explore multidimensional culture, from there find ways to develop beauty, contributing to eliminating negative things,” Tien said.

10X further revealed that her essay came from her own true experiences, written like a slow-motion film in words, accented with unique details, creating a cinematic story. This helped the admissions board visualize more clearly what the female student went through.

In her supplementary essay, Tien recounted her charity trip to Son La, through the values she learned from observing the cultural customs of the ethnic minorities there.

The thing that the Hanoi student is most proud of in her application is the charity music performance at the Vietnam National Academy of Music, which attracted 150 participants. As the head of the organizing committee and a performing artist in the music night, Tien and her friends spent 4 months writing the script and rehearsing for the program.

Although this is not the biggest stage I have ever performed on, it is the stage that makes me most proud. We sent all the proceeds from the concert to the United Nations Children's Fund,” Tien said.

To complete her university application, Tien had to take the SAT and IELTS exams. As a result, she achieved a SAT score of 1540 and an IELTS score of 8.0 on her first try. She studied for the SAT for nearly a year and did not have to spend time studying for the IELTS, as she already had a foundation.

With a passion for culture, Tien participated in a number of outstanding studies: “Developing market culture to create sustainable livelihoods for ethnic minorities” and “The impact of media and marketing on the preservation of traditional craft villages”. The female student is also a world columnist for a major newspaper and a volunteer at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology.

Next summer, Le Hoang Tien will go to the United States to study. With a desire to preserve culture, the female student plans to pursue two majors: Communications and Asian Cultural Studies at Vassar College.

“I am currently very excited to join Vassar College, where I can maximize my artistic abilities and passion. In the distant future, after completing my studies, I want to return to Vietnam, apply the knowledge I have learned, and join hands with everyone to preserve, protect and promote traditional cultural values of the nation,” the female student from Hanoi expressed.
