According to the researcher, in addition to its aesthetic value, one of the outstanding values of King Ham Nghi's paintings is its historical value. ''His paintings will probably be worth more over time, not just 31,000 euros,'' Mr. Khoi said.
The painting "Promenade on the Banks of the Allier" was hammered for 26,000 euros (704 million VND).
King Ham Nghi was born in 1871, his real name was Nguyen Phuc Minh, his courtesy name was Ung Lich, and he ascended the throne in 1884 at the age of 13. He was the eighth emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. In 1885, after the fall of the capital Hue, King Ham Nghi and Ton That Thuyet left the capital and issued the Can Vuong edict to fight against the French colonialists. In 1888, the king was arrested and exiled by the French in Alger (capital of Algeria). During his time in France, his painting talent was discovered. He died in 1944 of stomach cancer.
Last September, at the Drouot Hotel in Paris (France), Lynda Trouvé auctioned 19 works by the king, for a total of 330,000 euros (more than 8.9 billion VND). Of which, the most expensive was Bushes at Sunset , which was hammered for 38,000 euros (more than one billion VND).
In addition to 10 paintings by King Ham Nghi, 259 works and artifacts of Indochina art such as porcelain teapots and 19th-century betel boxes were sold. Many paintings by famous names in the history of Vietnamese painting such as Mai Thu, Le Pho, Nguyen Phan Chanh, and Nguyen Van Ty were also sold. Among them, the silk painting After duty by Nguyen Phan Chanh achieved a result of 102,000 euros (2.7 billion VND), the most expensive auction, although it was estimated to be only 8,000-12,000 euros (about 216-325 million VND).
