The Mendeleev International Chemistry Olympiad was first held in 1967 by the Ministry of Education of the Soviet Union for high school students from Soviet countries. Since 2004, the competition has been expanded, with many countries sending students to participate. Currently, the competition is hosted by the Faculty of Chemistry, Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Melnichenkoko Foundation.

This year, for the first time, Vietnamese students participated in this exam, in Shenzhen, China, from April 21 to 26. In total, more than 150 candidates from 26 countries and territories competed.

The exam has three rounds, each lasting 5 hours. In rounds 1 and 2, candidates take a theory test, and in round 3, they take a practical test. The organizing committee awarded 15 gold medals, 30 silver medals, and 45 bronze medals. In addition, the two candidates with the highest scores in the theory and practical rounds were awarded separate prizes.
