Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death globally, but new research published in the scientific journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition has found that a beloved fruit can promote heart and brain health, while also controlling cholesterol levels.
Scientists from the University of California (USA) analyzed and evaluated 47 clinical trials and 13 observational studies from 2000 to 2023. Most of these studies reported on the effects of strawberries on the heart, brain and cancer risk.
Results found that strawberries significantly support heart and brain health by lowering cholesterol, reducing inflammation, and protecting cognitive function.
A beloved fruit that can boost heart and brain health, while also controlling cholesterol levels
Specifically, eating 1 - 4 cups of strawberries per day brings remarkable benefits, especially improving cardiovascular health and metabolism, according to the science site Scitech Daily.
Researchers say strawberries are rich in beneficial phytonutrients such as polyphenols and fiber, which help lower bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels and reduce inflammation. This leads to improved overall heart health and better control of cardiovascular risk factors.
They concluded that strawberries are a natural and effective way to reduce cardiovascular risk and slow cognitive decline.
Effects of strawberries on the cardiovascular system
The authors found that eating strawberries daily could have a significant impact on heart health, especially in people at higher risk of heart disease. By improving fat metabolism and reducing inflammation, strawberries may help reduce the risk of heart disease.
Lead author Dr Roberta Holt, from the University of California, said: “Strawberries are rich in heart-healthy phytonutrients. Our review found that regular strawberry consumption not only lowers cholesterol but also helps reduce inflammation, which is a major contributor to heart disease. This means that a cup of strawberries a day could significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.”
Effects of strawberries on the brain
Strawberries are packed with phytonutrients, fiber and vitamins, especially vitamin C, and can be easily added to smoothies, yogurt, salads or eaten as a snack.
In addition to heart health, research has also revealed exciting benefits for brain health.
The results show that strawberries can help slow cognitive decline and fight dementia, thanks to their rich flavonoid content. These berries can support cognitive function and fight oxidative stress, helping the brain stay sharp as we age, according to Scitech Daily.
“Strawberries are a convenient, delicious and affordable way to support heart health,” says Toby Amidor, a US-based nutritionist and food safety consultant. “They are packed with phytonutrients, fibre and vitamins, especially vitamin C, and can be easily added to smoothies, yogurt, salads or eaten as a snack.”
