Over since it became the capital city of Đại Việt (Việt Nam) with the name Thăng long in 1010, Hà Nội has come through the ups and downs in history to remain the crucial economic, social and cultural center of Việt Nam. The Old Quarter or the core of this unique and attracting thousands-of-years-old city has become a must for all visitors.
Composed of the “36 guilds-streets” and the ruined Imperial Citadel, this Quarter has built up the bustling and vibrant life typical of Hanoi. Not just an economic center, it is also a cultural and historical treasure trove abundant in: traditional festivals; historical and cultural relics; the local refined lifestyle; traditional crafts as testified by the names of many of the streets; temples dedicated to the founders of such crafts; Buddhist pagodas and communal houses, etc. So with its narrow crowed streets, shops close up to one another, very old small tube-shaped houses, and monuments in traditional architectural designs, the Old Quarter has created a special charm for the city.
To introduce to foreign visitors the unique and fascinating features of the Hà Nội Old Quarter, The Hà Nội Old Quarter Management Board in association with Thế Giới Publishers has published this book titled “Hanoi’s Old Quarter - Sacredness and Elegance”. We would like to thank the Italian Embassy in Việt Nam for their moral and financial support in publishing this project.
