Prime minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the ASEAN-Canada Special Summit and the 10th ASEAN-India Summit 21 in Vientiane (Laos) on 10/10.
At the ASEAN-Canada Special Summit on Promoting Connectivity and Resilience, leaders welcomed the positive progress made in bilateral relations since the upgrade to Strategic Partnership in 2023.
ASEAN is currently Canada's fourth largest trading partner. In 2023, two-way trade turnover reached US$20,35 billion; total FDI from Canada to ASEAN reached US$3,39 billion.
Emphasizes ASEAN's central and important position in the Indo-Pacific Strategy Binh Duong Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau affirmed his determination to work with ASEAN to complete negotiations on the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement by 2025, bringing practical benefits and prosperity to the people.
He also said that Canada will effectively implement its cooperation commitments and priorities, such as the Canadian Trade Gateway initiative in Southeast Asia worth 24 million Canadian dollars (CAD), as well as effectively disburse the ASEAN-Canada Trust Fund worth 1 million CAD for bilateral cooperation programs and projects.

The Prime Minister proposed three orientations to develop bilateral relations in a practical, effective and mutually beneficial manner.
Accordingly, ASEAN and Canada need to prioritize enhancing trade and investment connectivity, completing negotiations on the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement in 2025, and effectively utilizing the CPTPP Agreement.
Besides, according to the Prime Minister, it is necessary to prioritize connecting people and expanding cooperation. education, training, supporting ASEAN to develop high-quality human resources, providing more scholarships for students and researchers from ASEAN countries to come to Canada to research and study.
To develop a stronger and more resilient ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership, the Prime Minister suggested that Canada step up cooperation to enhance resilience to the challenges of climate change, support ASEAN countries and especially the Mekong sub-region in energy transition, environmental protection, disaster management, climate change response, emission reduction, and towards sustainable development.
Also follow the leader Goverment Vietnam and Canada need to participate in supporting ASEAN to further promote the development of digital economy, green economy, circular economy, and cybersecurity.
At the end of the Conference, leaders of ASEAN countries and Canada agreed to adopt a Joint Statement on Promoting ASEAN Connectivity and Resilience.
At the 21st ASEAN-India Summit, ASEAN leaders appreciated India's commitment to placing ASEAN at the center of its Act East Policy as well as in the Indian Ocean Initiative. Thai Binh Indian Ocean (IPOI).

According to the Prime Minister, the two sides also need to promote economic-trade-investment cooperation, develop breakthroughs, promote mutually supportive strengths and further open each other's markets.
At the end of the Conference, the leaders adopted the Declaration on Strengthening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace, Stability and Prosperity in the Region and the Joint Statement on Promoting Digital Transformation.
On 11/10, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will attend the ASEAN-US Summit, the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN-United Nations Summit.
