China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC) director Cao Phuc admitted that the effectiveness of the country's Covid-19 vaccine is not high.

The Chinese official admitted that the domestic Covid-19 vaccine was not highly effectiveMr. Cao Phuc during a press conference in Beijing

Talking at a conference in Chengdu city on 10 April, CCDC director Cao Phuc said that the protection rate of Covid-19 vaccine made by China is not high, so the authorities are considering whether to mix the type of vaccines together, according to the AP.

This is believed to be the first time that a leading Chinese scientist has openly discussed the low effectiveness of the country's vaccines. China has exported two domestic vaccines Sinovac and Sinopharm to 22 countries. However, Sinovac's effectiveness in preventing symptoms was only 50.4% and Pfizer-BioNTech (USA-Germany) vaccine is 97% effective, according to research in Brazil.

According to Mr. Cao China is considering two solutions including dosage adjustment. The time to rest between two injections and increasing the number of injections. The second way is to mix vaccines that are made using different technologies together. Experts say mixing vaccines together could increase the effectiveness. Researchers in the UK are studying the possibility of mixing the Pfizeer-BioNTech vaccine and the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Sinovac's spokesperson Liu acknowledges that the effectiveness of the vaccine varies according to the studies, but says this could be due to the study participant's age, virus strain and other factors.
