Overcoming her pain, Ms. Pham Thi Mai (65 years old) proactively contacted Cho Ray Hospital to offer to donate the organs of her son who was brain dead in a traffic accident, reviving the lives of many people on the brink of death.
Give to save people
In mid-September 9.2024, when we met Mr. Tran Quang Ho (Xuan Phu ward, Hue city, province) Hue) is eagerly preparing his luggage to go to Ba Ria - Vung Tau. Mr. Ho said that this is the second time he has visited "mother Mai" (Mrs. Pham Thi Mai, residing in Hamlet 2 Tay, Bau Lam Commune, Xuyen Moc District, Ba Ria Vung Tau Province), the person who gave him life, through donating the heart of her biological son. "Just like the last time, my heart is still beating with life and gratitude. I look forward to meeting my mother and burning incense for mother Mai's biological son," Mr. Ho said.
The strong man with a bright smile, 4 years ago was a lifeless figure, because of a diseased heart. Registering at the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, waiting to meet a suitable donor heart was his last hope. Miraculously, within 2 months of registration, he received information that there was a heart donor, all the indicators were suitable.
“Waking up after a major surgery, lying in an isolation room for 13 days with wires all over me and machines, feeling the strong beat of my new heart, each day becoming more and more in tune with my body, I knew I had passed through death’s door, reborn. I cried because I was grateful for the heart beating in my chest, especially grateful for my mother who, in her most painful moment, made a difficult but meaningful decision, which was to donate a part of her child’s body, so that someone else could continue to live, even if it was someone she had never met,” Mr. Ho choked up.
Last November, Mr. Ho and Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong (Minh Khai street, Hai Ba Trung district, Ha Noi) for the first time from two regions of the country made a meaningful trip to find a second mother who gave them life. On the day of the meeting, both the donor and the recipient of the sacred life shed tears.
Four years ago, Cuong's cirrhosis reached a stage where if he did not receive a liver transplant, his life would be counted in days. "My stomach was swollen and painful. My eyes were lifeless. I could not eat. I could not sleep sitting up or breathe. I felt death coming. My family had prepared for my funeral. At that time, like a miracle, I received both livers from the donor. When I woke up after the transplant, the feelings in my heart were all the best things in this life combined," Cuong emotionally said, grateful for the great love of his mother, who had previously been a stranger.
Returning from the brink of life and death, Mr. Cuong's life has completely changed. He is physically strong; his temperament is gentle and kind. Practicing chiropractic and acupuncture at home, Mr. Cuong works tirelessly from early morning to late at night. Mr. Cuong expressed: "My life was revived by love, so I repay life with simple daily actions. That is to put all my heart into the work of treating and helping others. Patients are the elderly and children, I treat them for free; I reduce 50% of the treatment fee for those of working age but in difficult circumstances. That is also the heartfelt thanks I want to send to Mai's mother, so that she can rest assured and be happy when she sees that her actions are worthy, and so that love continues in life."
Love is forever
The motion sickness made us pale, because of the journey of nearly 120 km, from Ho Chi Minh City to Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. But when we just arrived at the village, the fatigue seemed to fall behind, because when we stopped to ask for directions to Mrs. Pham Thi Mai's house, a woman who was going in the opposite direction, willingly turned her motorbike around, enthusiastically leading us through many winding roads, to the alley of her house. Before expressing her gratitude to the guests, she smiled simply: "Anyone here admires and respects the mother who did a difficult but beautiful thing to help many strangers win back their lives."
At the end of November 11.2020, when Ms. Mai's son had a traffic accident and became brain dead, the mother decided to donate her son's organs with the hope of saving the lives of patients who were on the verge of death. We followed the medical team from Ho Chi Minh City to Xuyen Moc to respectfully pay tribute to the deceased's spirit. That day, the mother, in extreme pain, still prayed that the patients who received her son's organs would be saved. Her wish came true when all four organ recipients were revived (patients at Ha Noi liver reception; in Thua Thien-Hue heart reception, in Long An , and Ca Mau kidney recipient).
In front of us is still the mother who never stops missing her son. But now, her heart is filled with warmth when she has more children with deep affection from all over the country and the love of the neighborhood. Mr. Nguyen Trung, a close neighbor, shared: "I did not expect that Ms. Mai would act so noblely, it is an example for the people here to know how to live for everyone, for the community more".
But Mrs. Mai said simply, during the war she was a female youth volunteer, during peacetime she was a veteran, worked at the commune level, she witnessed many unfortunate lives, lives tormented by serious illnesses. She always kept in mind to do as many good deeds as possible, including the intention to register to donate organs after death to save the lives of many sick people. When her son was in the intensive care unit of Ba Ria Hospital, waiting outside, Mrs. Mai witnessed a young wife crying because her husband had advanced liver cancer. So, when she received the news that her son was brain dead, she was extremely heartbroken, but the kind-hearted woman still thought about the lives of others and let her son's passing also help life. Mrs. Mai also added that she registered to donate organs, connecting love to life.
Dr. Du Thi Ngoc Thu - Head of the human organ transplant coordination unit, Cho Ray Hospital, once said that Ms. Mai's family was the first case to proactively contact the hospital, offering to donate organs to save a person when a relative unfortunately had an accident and became brain dead. That is a noble heart, a pioneer in giving away beautiful values. Then, in May 5.2021, in the despair of being separated from a loved one in a traffic accident, another family in Ba Ria - Vung Tau also overcame the pain to continue that act, saving the lives of 4 other patients, helping love to last forever in life...
