At 7:00 a.m. this morning (November 6), authorities and local residents found the body of Cao Van Cuong (born 1971, Quang Binh) who was swept away by floodwaters after rescuing a 5th grade student.
On November 6, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Chairman of the People's Committee of Mai Hoa Commune, Tuyen Hoa District, Quang Binh Province, said that after a night of searching, the forces found the body of Mr. Cao Van Cuong in Bac Hoa Commune, about 50m from the accident site.
Earlier, at around 4:30 pm yesterday, a 5th grade student at Xuan Mai Primary School (Mai Hoa Commune) was swept away by the water while crossing a flooded area in Bac Hoa Village. Upon discovering the incident, Mr. Cao Van Cuong jumped into the water, swam to the scene and saved the child.
“Mr. Cuong’s family raises ducks so they have a boat nearby. When they saw that Mr. Cuong and the child looked exhausted, they quickly rowed the boat closer to help. When the child was pulled onto the boat, Mr. Cuong was exhausted and fell into the water,” Mr. Tuan recounted.
About 100 people including police, military, commune, village forces and many volunteer teams searched from 5:00 p.m. yesterday until this morning.
“In addition to diving, the forces used many types of nets, canoes, and motorboats, but because the water remained high all night, the search was difficult. This morning, the water receded, and we mobilized people to wade out to help search. Cuong's body was found about 50 meters from the accident site,” Mr. Tuan added.
Mr. Cuong's body was brought home by the authorities and relatives for funeral arrangements.
