According to UN News , speaking before the UN Security Council, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding Rosemary DiCarlo stated that recent weeks have witnessed the fiercest fighting in the conflict that is about to turn two years old.

"The most serious armed conflict in Europe since World War II shows no signs of ending... This war must stop," Ms. DiCarlo stressed.

Besides, according to Ms. DiCarlo, the UN supports all meaningful efforts towards a just, sustainable and comprehensive peace.

Meanwhile, TASS quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that Moscow did not see any progress in the peace process involving Kiev, which "is going on with great difficulty according to the 'peace formula' of Ukrainian President Vlodymyr Zelensky, when a number of countries are discussing it but without Russia's participation."

Assessing this as “a very strange process, but nothing significant,” Mr. Peskov emphasized that, in fact, Kiev still refuses to hold any legally effective negotiations, and therefore, Moscow will continue to conduct a special military operation in the neighboring country.

Previously, in November 2022, President Zelensky proposed a peace formula, but did not propose any steps from Kiev, but only mentioned compensation for losses caused by Moscow's campaign.

According to Russia, despite promoting the peace formula, Ukraine has repeatedly rejected proposals and mediation from a third party.

Also on January 10, in a commentary published in Pravda , Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico wrote: "The West's strategy in Ukraine is ineffective... completely unsuccessful."

According to him, Russia's actions in Ukraine after February 24, 2022 were exploited by the West with the aim of "bringing Russia to its knees". To achieve this, the Kiev government was provided with weapons and billions of dollars.

However, saying that "the West constantly misjudges the situation in Russia," the leader of the NATO country pointed out that Moscow has complete control over the new areas.

Besides, the Russian economy and the ruble “have not collapsed yet, sanctions are increasing the self-sufficiency of this vast country, Russian energy giants are announcing record raw material supplies to China and India”.

Assessing that Ukraine is unable to launch a counterattack, Prime Minister Fico assessed: "President Zelensky's position has been shaken, while Russian President Vladimir Putin's position is increasing and support for him is increasingly consolidated."
