On September 28, the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi said that more than 50,000 people in Lebanon have fled to Syria, amid increasing Israeli airstrikes on positions of the Hezbollah Islamist movement in Lebanon

On social network X, Mr. Grandi clarified that the above figure includes both Lebanese and Syrian people. Meanwhile, the fighting has also forced more than 200,000 people to evacuate inside Lebanon. According to Mr. Grandi, relief operations are being carried out in coordination with both governments.
According to UNHCR, the total number of people displaced in Lebanon has now reached 211,319, of whom 118,000 have been displaced since Israel intensified its airstrikes on September 23. The rest have been displaced since Lebanon’s Hezbollah began low-intensity cross-border attacks, a day after the conflict erupted in the Gaza Strip on October 7.
Israel has now shifted the focus of its military campaign from Gaza to Lebanon. The Lebanese Health Ministry estimates that the escalation of cross-border fighting over the past week has claimed more than 700 lives. Most of the victims died on September 23, the deadliest day of violence since Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war.
In a development related to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, on September 28, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an IDF airstrike on the outskirts of the capital Beirut, Lebanon, the day before.
The IDF's assassination of Hezbollah leader has further aggravated the conflict between this force and Israel.
On September 28, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani condemned Israel's assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah as a "shameful crime", saying that Israel had "crossed all red lines". Prime Minister Sudani praised Nasrallah as "a martyr on the path of justice".
Meanwhile, on the same day, Iran's IRNA news agency reported that Abbas Nilforushan - a famous general in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who was placed on the US sanctions list - was also killed in an airstrike that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut on September 27.
