Durian has a wide open door to take the top spot.
Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy, Director of Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Company Limited ( Ben Tre ), said: Although Thailand is in the harvest season, Vietnam's durian exports are not much affected, because the demand of the Chinese market is still very large. Currently, the West is at the end of the season, the output is limited, but the Eastern provinces are starting to enter the durian season, followed by the Central Highlands provinces. This is an advantage for Vietnam's durian because it is harvested continuously almost all year round. Currently, the purchase price of durian at the garden fluctuates from 50,000 - 70,000 VND/kg.
In addition to durian, green-skinned grapefruit exports to the US are also going well. However, in the US market, some other fruits are not doing so well due to fierce competition from fruits from South America, which are also in harvest season.
Processing dragon fruit for export in Tien
According to businesses, in addition to durian, the export of many fruit and vegetable products has continued to grow well in recent times, such as dragon fruit, banana, jackfruit, mango, passion fruit, etc. Preliminary reports from the customs authority show that in May alone, fruit and vegetable exports reached 466 million USD, up 19% compared to April and up nearly 81% over the same period last year. The cumulative value in the first 5 months of 2023 reached over 1.8 billion USD, up nearly 29% over the same period last year. Among the 10 largest export markets for Vietnamese fruit and vegetables in the first 4 months of the year, the Netherlands grew the most with 72%. Notably, the most important market is still China with a growth rate of nearly 30%. On average, since the beginning of the year, China has imported over 200 million USD worth of fruit and vegetables from Vietnam each month.
By the end of April, the export value of dragon fruit and durian was equivalent to about 23% of the total export turnover of the entire fruit and vegetable industry. However, dragon fruit exports are currently slowing down due to China's harvest season and low consumption. Meanwhile, durian continues to receive good news when recently, China has granted 47 more growing area codes and 18 packing facility codes for Vietnamese durian.
Over 20 billion USD in agricultural, forestry and fishery exports since the beginning of the year
Thus, up to now, Vietnam has 293 growing areas and 115 durian packing facilities that have been granted official export codes to this market by China. The Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that this unit is working with the Chinese Customs to agree on the next online inspection schedule for about 400 growing areas and 60 durian packing facilities that have submitted documents to China. This is good news for many Vietnamese durian growers and exporters, because this means that the output and export value of durian will continue to increase in the near future.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, Vice President of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that in the current difficult context in many industries and markets, the growth of the fruit and vegetable industry and recent positive signals are very encouraging. For durian, the Chinese market alone has a capacity of up to 4 billion USD, with them receiving more supplies from Vietnam and other countries, meaning they want to have competition. This is also a market opportunity for Vietnamese durian. As early as August 2022, when Vietnamese durian had a license, in just 2 months, it exported 396 million USD.
Durian becomes a key export item
Bringing fruits and vegetables far and wide
In addition to China, fruit and vegetable exports have also grown quite well in many other important markets such as South Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, the UAE and Malaysia. Mr. Vo Quan Huy, Director of Huy Long An Company Limited, known as the "banana king", said: Although many other sectors are facing difficulties, banana exports are still favorable in important markets such as China, South Korea and Japan. Currently, partners are still maintaining regular imports with stable prices. "We believe that the market will continue to be positive in the coming time. This is one of the key products of fruits and vegetables. In 2022, banana exports will reach a turnover of over 310 million USD, an increase of 35%," Mr. Huy shared.
According to Mr. Tung, green economy or green agriculture is currently the trend of development. If they want to maintain and develop, businesses need to meet GlobalGAP standards and SMETA standards (ethical business practices and social responsibility). Currently, importers have not made mandatory requirements. However, Vietnamese businesses that want to maintain the export development trend must invest now, otherwise they will lose a lot of time and opportunities.
Dr. Ha Thuy Hanh, former Deputy Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), said: For the most important market, China, we also need to reorganize production to suit the new trend. Currently, it is almost difficult to export informal goods because China has stricter management in the direction that products need to have certification of growing area codes, packaging codes, traceability, etc.
Therefore, the important role of leading enterprises is not only to guide farmers to produce according to the requirements of importers but also to the issue of transaction culture and e-commerce. On that basis, farmers must comply with certain procedures because they are related to commitments, production contracts, product consumption, etc. Hopefully, in the coming time, enterprises and farmers will cooperate more closely because the situation of each person selling on their own will not be suitable for development.
Experts and business leaders in the fruit and vegetable industry said that in previous years, China faced many difficulties due to its "Zero Covid" policy. Since the end of 2022, this country has officially reopened and increased the import of fruits and vegetables from Vietnam. If the current growth momentum is maintained, fruits and vegetables will not only reach but also exceed the export turnover target of 4 billion USD.
