China is the largest market for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first 9 months of 2024, the total export turnover of agriculture, forestry and fishery products is estimated at 46.28 billion USD, an increase of 21% over the same period in 2023. The whole industry had a trade surplus of 13.86 billion USD, an increase of 71.2% over the same period in 2023. Of which, China ranked 2nd with a turnover of 9.26 billion USD, accounting for 20% and China is also the largest market for Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry.

Analyzing the agricultural, forestry and fishery export market in the first 9 months of 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the United States took the lead with a turnover of 9.72 billion USD, accounting for 21% of the market share in the total agricultural, forestry and fishery export turnover of Vietnam; China ranked second with a turnover of 9.26 billion USD, accounting for 20%; Japan was the third largest market with more than 3 billion USD, accounting for a market share of 6.6%. Compared to the same period in 2023, the export value of Vietnam's agricultural, forestry and fishery products to these three markets all increased by 10-20%.

Regarding fruits and vegetables, in the past 9 months, China continued to be the largest market with a turnover of 3.79 billion USD, accounting for 67% of the total export turnover of fruits and vegetables of Vietnam in the past 9 months.

Recently, Vietnam has signed two more Protocols allowing the export of frozen durian and fresh coconut to China. It is expected that in the near future, these two Vietnamese products will also reach the Chinese market after businesses have obtained growing area codes, packaging facility codes, met other Chinese regulations and signed export orders.

Recently, Vietnam continued to sign two more protocols allowing the export of frozen durian and fresh coconut to China. This is expected to contribute to the growth of fruit and vegetable export turnover in 2024.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, pointed out that since the Protocol allowing fresh durian to be exported to China was signed in July 2022, durian exports to China have continuously grown remarkably and durian has become the number 1 export item of the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable industry, with a value of more than 2.2 billion USD in 2023 and has exceeded 2.5 billion USD in the first 9 months of this year.

Regarding coconuts, Vietnam is currently the third largest supplier of coconuts to China, reaching more than 111,000 tons, worth 31.79 million USD, down 30.6% in volume and 18.6% in value compared to the same period in 2023. The market share of Vietnamese coconuts in China's total imports decreased slightly from 22.86% in the first 7 months of 2023 to 22.57% in the first 7 months of 2024.

However, according to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), China's reduction in imports of Vietnamese coconuts is only short-term because China has agreed to grant official export licenses for fresh coconuts from Vietnam from August 19, 2024. This opens up a great opportunity for the Vietnamese coconut industry to access the large potential market of China.

Currently, Vietnam has about 200,000 hectares of coconut plantations, with an output of more than 2 million tons, ranking 4th in the world. On September 11 and 12, the General Administration of Customs of China inspected 24 coconut growing areas and 12 fresh coconut packaging facilities in Vietnam before granting codes for these facilities to export fresh coconuts to China. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development aims to have about 80% or more of the codes approved.

China is still a large market with great potential.

At the first Vietnam Fruit Festival held in Beijing, China at the end of September, Mr. Nguyen Huu Hieu, Sales Director of Dong Giao Food Export Joint Stock Company (Doveco) said that the Chinese market is very large and has great potential, not only for Doveco but also for all Vietnamese fruit businesses. Dong Giao has been exporting to the Chinese market for many years through official channels.

"The biggest challenge in the Chinese market today is the increasingly high quality requirements, so businesses must promptly adapt and meet these requirements. Currently, passion fruit is one of our leading products in China. In the near future, we will promote the export of durian. We hope that, in addition to fresh fruit, Vietnam will promote the export of processed fruit products. At the same time, we will increase official exports because unofficial exports are unsafe," said Mr. Hieu.

According to Ms. Hoang Thi Thanh Thuy, International Director of TH Group, China is a potential market with a large population and high demand. However, this market is also very competitive because the products produced must meet all strict requirements on food safety. This is a big challenge for Vietnamese enterprises. However, for TH, this challenge is an opportunity because since its establishment, TH Group has always believed in producing good products for the community.

Vietnamese agricultural products were introduced at the first Vietnamese Fruit Festival held in Beijing, China at the end of September.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Nguyen Khac Tien, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ameii Vietnam Joint Stock Company, said that the Chinese market has great potential because of the increasing demand for high-quality agricultural products. However, to meet that demand and taste, we must improve product quality, comply with all regulations on food safety, packaging, labels, etc. The way Chinese people approach new products is very different, so we must understand their habits and culture to gradually approach them.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam said that up to now, 12 types of Vietnamese fruit have been exported to the Chinese market with an estimated turnover of about 4.5 billion USD by 2024.

Mr. Nam said that in order to promote agricultural trade between the two countries in the coming time, relevant agencies of the two countries need to continue to strengthen coordination in removing barriers and opening up agricultural markets, especially agencies of the General Administration of Customs of China to expand agricultural, forestry and fishery products, especially Vietnamese specialty fruits, to be introduced and consumed in the Chinese market.

Associations, businesses and investors of the two countries need to strengthen cooperation and linkage to expand markets, develop sustainable agricultural product chains for export, and expand investment in export-serving fields such as: trade promotion, logistics, wholesale markets, cold storage chains, preservation, processing and breeding...

The trade and agricultural agencies of the two countries will strengthen coordination with localities, associations, and businesses to continue organizing agricultural product trade festivals in many other potential localities and regions of China in the coming time.
