Mr. Nguyen Lam Vien - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vinamit Joint Stock Company - said that frozen durian is expected to contribute positively to the company's processed product revenue. The signing of the protocol in August is a favorable condition for Vinamit to accelerate export progress in the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, GC Food Joint Stock Company (GC Food) is also taking advantage of this opportunity to expand the export of processed products such as coconut jelly and aloe vera to China. Mr. Nguyen Diep Phap - Deputy General Director of GC Food International Business Division - said that this is a potential market this year and if favorable, export activities will have new steps forward.
Not only fresh coconuts and frozen durians are officially exported to the Chinese market, Vietnamese passion fruit is about to enter the United States, bringing new expectations to the fruit and vegetable industry. Mr. Hoang Trung - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development - said that the two sides have reached a consensus to allow the export of Vietnamese passion fruit to the United States. After that, the two sides will carry out procedures to consult with the authorities within 60 days before officially announcing.
Previously, on July 30, 2024, after 3 months of widely consulting with relevant parties, the Korean Animal and Plant Quarantine Service (APQA) officially announced on the APQA website the import regulations for fresh grapefruit from Vietnam to Korea. Thus, grapefruit is the 3rd fresh fruit from Vietnam allowed to be imported into the Korean market, along with dragon fruit and mango.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hien - Director of Vinagreenco Company - informed that the signing of the Protocol with Korea at the end of July has opened up great opportunities for fresh grapefruit from Vietnam. Currently, the company has also prepared the necessary procedures to be ready to bring goods to the Korean market. Because this is a high-end and demanding market, it is necessary to prepare carefully and have good quality to be ready to best meet market requirements.
Continue to open the market and strengthen trade promotion
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in August 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports are estimated to reach more than 700 million USD, up 26.8% over the previous month and up 50.8% over the same period in 2023. This is one of the months with the highest export value of the year for the fruit and vegetable industry. In the first 8 months of 2024, fruit and vegetable exports reached 4.58 billion USD.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association - commented that Korea is a very notable market for Vietnam in 2024. As of July 2024, export turnover to this country reached 189 million USD, an increase of 51% over the same period in 2023, equivalent to the US market. With the addition of grapefruit, the growth momentum can continue to maintain a high level. It is estimated that Korea can bring in an additional revenue of about 20 million USD for grapefruit. However, this market also imports from many different sources, so we need to ensure good quality and suitable prices to increase competitiveness.
With the addition of the frozen segment for durian export, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen believes that in the future, China will increase the import of frozen split durian for processing because it will reduce transportation costs due to the removal of the shell from the source. Vietnamese enterprises exporting frozen products will also have less pressure in complying with plant quarantine regulations (possible harmful organisms associated with fresh fruit) and can sell deep into the Chinese mainland thanks to the long preservation time.
“China opens its doors to frozen durian, and durian exports could reach 3.5 billion USD this year. With the entry of frozen durian, it is predicted that this year will be a new record year for processed fruit and vegetable exports, with a turnover of 1.4 - 1.5 billion USD. At the same time, it is expected that fruit and vegetable exports in 2024 will reach 7 billion USD,” said Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen.
In the Chinese market, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development are also promoting the expansion of products exported to this market. It is expected that the Vietnamese Fruit Festival in China will be held on the occasion of the Vietnam-China Intergovernmental Committee meeting taking place in Beijing on September 29-30.
In the US market, along with passion fruit, Vietnam also proposed that the US initiate a review process for some new Vietnamese fruits such as seedless lemons, guavas, and jackfruit; agree on a list of pests and the next steps in the review process for tangerines, plums, lemons, pomegranates, and some other products for US plant varieties.
Vietnamese tropical fruits are present in important markets such as China, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Europe, etc. and are increasingly popular and highly appreciated for their quality.
According to agricultural expert Hoang Trong Thuy, Vietnamese agricultural products are now present in more than 180 markets with 16 FTAs being implemented and 3 FTAs being signed. Import markets in countries with medium segments such as ASEAN and high-end market segments such as Korea and the EU have very high demand for Vietnamese agricultural products. In addition to market opening, in order for agricultural products in general and fruits in particular to fully exploit the potential and advantages in these markets, it is necessary to standardize raw material areas in terms of both quality and quantity.
Agricultural product associations should organize to introduce their products to consumers in countries where Vietnamese products are exported to, in order to build consumer trust in Vietnamese branded agricultural products. With a brand, our country's agricultural products can sustainably participate in the global value chain.
