Chili exports in 2023 will earn 20 million USD, up to 107% China - Vietnam's largest chili export market

According to statistics from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), chili exports in March reached 1,523 tons with a value of 4.2 million USD, a sharp increase of 72.3% compared to February 2024. Of which, China alone imported 1,339 tons, accounting for nearly 88% of output and Laos imported 106 tons, accounting for 7%.

Before the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024, the price of chili in the garden fluctuated from 38,000 to 40,000 VND per kg. For the selected export type, the price was from 60,000 to 65,000 VND/kg, grade 2 chili was 58,000 to 60,000 VND, and market chili was from 55,000 to 58,000 VND. This level is doubling compared to the same period in 2023. The reason is that the demand for chili in markets such as China and Korea is bustling, causing demand to be higher than supply, pushing up prices. With the current selling price, people can earn from 200 to 300 million VND/ha (excluding costs).

According to data from the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the Mekong Delta is considered the "capital" of chili in Vietnam. Chili is grown mainly in the provinces of Dong Thap, An Giang, Tien Giang, Soc Trang, Vinh Long and Tra Vinh with a total area of over 7,000 hectares, producing about 100,000 tons per year. Meanwhile, in the Central Highlands, the growing area is about 4,000-5,000 hectares with a production of about 60,000 tons per year.

Lang Son is also one of the key chili growing areas in our country with the chili growing area in the province reaching more than 1,479 hectares in 2023. In the world, Asia is currently the largest chili producing region in the world, accounting for about 80% of global output. The global chili trade is worth about 35 billion USD per year, not less than the world's major consumer goods such as coffee or tea.

In general, in 2023, Vietnam's chili export turnover reached 20 million USD, equivalent to 10,173 tons, a sharp increase of 107% compared to 2022.
