What is the reason for the sharp decline in tea exports in the first 8 months of 2023? Vietnam is the 23rd largest tea supplier to the UK market

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the first 9 months of 2023, Vietnam's tea exports reached 82 thousand tons, worth 140.8 million USD, down 14.2% in volume and 15.9% in value compared to the same period in 2022.

The average export price of tea reached 1,717.3 USD/ton, down 2% over the same period in 2022.

Tea exports to major markets all decreased significantly in the first 9 months of 2023. In particular, the main export market of the tea industry, Pakistan, is still facing high inflation and interest rates, along with a shortage of foreign currency, causing importers to limit tea purchases. Therefore, tea exports to the Pakistani market continue to decline.

In the first 9 months of 2023, tea exports to this market reached 33.4 thousand tons, worth 64.5 million USD, down 12.3% in volume and 10% in value compared to the same period in 2022.

Next, exports to the Taiwan market (China) reached 10.7 thousand tons, worth 17.9 million USD, down 8.3% in volume and 10.2% in value; to Russia reached 5 thousand tons, worth 8.4 million USD, down 32.6% in volume and 35.2% in value...

Among the main export markets in the first 9 months of 2023, Iraq and Saudi Arabia were the two markets that recorded double-digit export growth. Accordingly, the Iraqi market increased by 48.8% in volume and 32.9% in value; while the Saudi Arabian market increased by 12.2% in volume but decreased by 3.3% in value compared to the same period last year.

Industry experts say that the prospect of tea exports in the last months of 2023 has not shown positive signs, as tea consumption demand in countries is limited due to inflationary pressure.

Besides, tea enterprises also face difficulties when regulations on technical barriers are increasingly strict, making it difficult for Vietnamese tea enterprises to meet and take advantage of opportunities from the FTAs that Vietnam has signed.
