Pangasius exports estimated to reach 2 billion USD by the end of 2024
According to the Vietnam Department of Fisheries, in 2024, the pangasius farming area in the Mekong Delta region will be more than 5,300 hectares, with an output of 1.67 million tons, and export turnover in the first 10 months of the year of 1.56 billion USD, an increase of 8.9% compared to 2023, estimated to reach 2 billion USD by the end of the year.
Ms. To Thi Tuong Lan - Deputy General Secretary of VASEP Association - said that in 2024, the pangasius industry has many positive opportunities in anti-dumping results, inventory in major markets decreases, there is no surplus of raw fish, and good signals from economic recovery.
“Next year, the US market has many opportunities as pangasius is among the favorite products.
Besides, the Middle East market has great potential because it depends heavily on imported food supplies, up to 80% of food and food products, equivalent to 40 billion USD/year," said Ms. Lan.

Breakthrough into the Halal market in 2025
Ms. Nguyen Minh Phuong - Head of the Department of Asian and African Markets under the Ministry of Industry and Trade - said that the raw material purchase price in the first 11 months of 2024 was at 26,000 - 27,000 VND/kg, making it difficult for fish farmers to make a profit.
“Vietnam has the ability to export agricultural and aquatic products worth over 50 billion USD/year and has built supply chains. This will be an opportunity to penetrate the Halal market.
However, the current challenge is that there is no single Halal standard recognized worldwide; the certificate is not permanent, not mutually recognized in all countries, for all products,” Ms. Phuong said.
At the conference, Mr. Tran Van Hung - General Director of Hung Ca Company Limited (Dong Thap) - proposed that central ministries and branches support businesses in building certified emission reduction farming areas to diversify exports to markets.
“Currently, we are also using tra fish by-products to process products with very high added value. In my opinion, in 2022-2023, the export will be about 2.6-2.7 billion USD, not just 1.85 billion USD according to statistics of tra fish fillets, with by-products alone about 1.5 million tons/year.
Currently, businesses are also facing difficulties due to a shortage of fish fry supply and the lack of concentrated pangasius fish breeding areas. We request the agricultural sector to support businesses in building high-quality fish breeding areas," said Mr. Hung.
Mr. Phung Duc Tien - Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development - said that in 2024, seafood exports will reach 8.33 billion USD, estimated to reach 10.5 billion USD by the end of the year. Green growth is an inevitable trend, so the industry that goes first will have the advantage first.
“Next year, we need to focus on breaking through the Halal market with more than 2 billion people, which is considered the key to opening the door for Vietnam's agricultural and aquatic product exports. In addition, we need to make the most of waste and by-products and apply technology to create added value for the pangasius industry.
Breed determines productivity and quality. I suggest that Dong Thap and An Giang provinces focus on the pangasius breeding industry, ensuring scale and biosafety to meet the needs of the Mekong Delta region and the whole country," Mr. Tien emphasized.
