On March 27, Rome marked a new step forward in the tourism industry when it put into operation the robot ADRIANO at the Temple of Hadrian and Vibia Sabina. This robot will take on the role of tour guide, providing historical information and welcoming visitors to the ancient monument.
"Hello! I am ADRIANO, the first robot tour guide in Rome. My mission is to take visitors through time, explore the Vibia Sabina temple, reveal stories about the Empress and Emperor Hadrian, and decipher unique works of art," said the robot ADRIANO.
Ms. CINDY PRICE, a tourist from Minnesota, USA shared: " As robots become more accessible, controlling them will bring unique experiences. I believe that people will not be able to resist this curiosity."
The robot is equipped with artificial intelligence and an advanced robotic hand with artificial muscles that allows it to shake hands and grasp objects.
"Unlike industrial robots that can be dangerous, ADRIANO is designed to interact safely with humans. For example, if a visitor wants to hug or shake hands, the robot will react gently, without causing harm," said Giovanni Rosato, a robotics and artificial intelligence engineer at IIT (Italian Institute of Technology).
ADRIANO is equipped with 36 sensors for mapping and self-localization, along with realistic facial expression features, helping to create more natural and engaging communication with visitors.
ADRIANO's special feature is its ability to bring the experience of visiting Hadrian's Temple from afar. Visitors only need to equip themselves with virtual reality glasses to travel to Rome and explore ancient ruins right at home.
The initiative is the result of an 18-month collaboration between the Rome Chamber of Commerce, the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), Sapienza University of Rome and QBRobotics, with the participation of more than 30 experts.
