There are groups of subjects lacking core subjects, universities must review

To facilitate students in choosing elective subjects in the high school graduation exam according to the new program that are suitable to their abilities, strengths and admission goals, many universities have added admission combinations. However, there are also schools that have added new combinations without core subjects, causing public concern.

Expanding opportunities for candidates

According to information from the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in 2025, the school will have 6 admission combinations. In addition to the traditional combinations, the school has added 2 more combinations with Informatics subjects: Math, English, Informatics and Math, Physics, Informatics.

Hanoi University of Transport also added a new group GT1 (Mathematics, Physics, Informatics) from 2025 with some majors such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Control Engineering and Automation.

The Academy of Journalism and Communication plans to reserve 50% of its enrollment quota for admission based on high school graduation exam scores. Some new combinations in admission include: Literature, English, Economics and Law Education; Literature, English, Information Technology; Literature, Mathematics, Economics and Law Education.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology also added the K01 admission combination (Math, Literature combined with one of the four subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics) in addition to the traditional admission combinations.

Hanoi University of Industry plans to implement new combinations with Technology and Information Technology subjects including: Mathematics, Physics, Technology (A0C); Mathematics, Physics, Information Technology (A0T); Mathematics, Chemistry, Technology (B0C); Mathematics, English, Technology (D0C). This will be one of the combinations used to consider admission to 35 majors/training programs of the school.

According to Dr. Than Thanh Son, Head of Training Department, Hanoi University of Industry, the goal of the 2018 General Education Program is to help students master general knowledge, effectively apply the knowledge and skills they have learned to life and self-study throughout their lives; have a suitable career orientation through choosing subjects according to their career orientation. Informatics and Technology, along with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc., play an important role in promoting STEM education. Therefore, including these subjects in the admission combination is in line with the requirements of some of the school's main training fields such as Technology, Engineering, Computers and Information Technology; in line with the goal of training human resources to serve the 4.0 industrial revolution.

However, there are also schools that open combinations without core subjects. For example, Hoa Binh University will enroll all majors with 4 combinations. Of which, the Medical major under the health sector has only 1 combination with Biology, which is B00, and the other 3 combinations are A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry), D07 and A01 (Math, Physics, English). The 3 majors of Traditional Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing also enroll 4 combinations B00, A00, D07 and A11 (Math, Chemistry, Economic and Legal Education).

Candidates who want to apply to Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance can use 6 subject combinations to apply to each major. In which, Literature is used as the main subject for all admission combinations.

Need to reconsider

From 2025, due to many changes in the new general education program, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) will remove the limit on the number of admission combinations for each major and training program. Previously, each major could only use a maximum of 4 admission combinations.

However, to ensure input quality, the regulations require that the admission combination must have at least 3 suitable subjects, of which Math or Literature accounts for at least 25% of the weight. In particular, from 2026, the number of common subjects between the combinations must account for at least 50% of the admission weight, ensuring uniformity in assessing candidates' abilities.

Currently, some universities recruit students for combinations that do not have core subjects related to the training field. For example, there are schools that recruit students for English Language but the combination does not include English, or Medicine does not use Chemistry or Biology scores; even Physics Pedagogy but the combination does not require Physics.

According to the assessment of the Ministry of Education and Training, the results of the 2024 enrollment showed that training institutions used too many enrollment methods, causing information interference. There were more than 200 methods with no or very few candidates registering; fairness between enrollment methods was not ensured. Many training institutions have not analyzed the correlation and compared the learning outcomes of students according to the enrollment methods.

Regarding this issue, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son said, we do not limit the number of combinations, which does not mean that schools are free to introduce combinations just for the purpose of recruiting more. Expanding the number of combinations is to give schools the opportunity to recruit the most suitable candidates for their major/training program in the context of the new general education program allowing students to choose their subjects. The basic principle is that for subjects that are conditional knowledge in the university program, but in general education students do not choose to study those subjects, universities are not allowed to recruit these students.

Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son said that if an admission method/admission combination does not evaluate core knowledge and competencies for that industry, schools must review it.

The Ministry of Education and Training has assigned the Department of Higher Education to draft and develop an official dispatch to request schools to review this matter.
