Ms. Dang Thi Minh Hang (living in Ho Chi Minh City) is one of the pioneers in bringing virtual reality painting technology to the Vietnamese market. After 2 years of starting this type of painting, she has now released more than 15 impressive works.

Realistic painting in virtual space

As a digital artist and comic book artist, Ms. Minh Hang turned to virtual reality technology to avoid being left behind or out of step with the young workforce.

"Virtual reality painting is a trend among many young artists who love creativity associated with technology. Not many people in Vietnam are involved in this type of art, so I have to consult all the materials, software, etc. from foreign artists," said Ms. Minh Hang.

According to Ms. Minh Hang, virtual reality artists do not need paint, brushes or paper, but only need to wear virtual reality glasses to start creating art. Depending on their needs, users can choose VR software with suitable functions.

"This is a simulated environment created by humans using specialized software, controlled by virtual reality devices. Users can feel, move, interact and explore in the virtual environment through devices such as virtual reality glasses or simply manipulate directly by hand," she explained.

Unlike 2D paintings - only used for exhibitions or decoration, virtual reality paintings can be used in a wider range of applications, such as backdrops, TVC advertisements, intros for events...

In addition to virtual reality, Ms. Minh Hang also creates paintings using mixed reality (MR) technology - a type of technology that blends the real and virtual worlds, creating a more effective experience for viewers. With MR paintings, viewers do not need to wear virtual reality glasses to visualize what the artist is drawing through many applications and devices to record the artist's strokes and actions...

Virtual reality artist Minh Hang said that this technology is not yet "mature" so there will be risks when applying it. Only when using it in practice and exploiting its functions will we know what limitations the software needs to overcome. Therefore, she often has to discuss with the technical team abroad to perfect the virtual reality painting technology.

Participate in software upgrades

Not only is she one of the pioneers in bringing VR painting to the Vietnamese market, Ms. Minh Hang is also the founder of the Endangered project - applying VR art to wildlife conservation. This female artist realized that with the limitless potential of creative techniques, humans can apply technology to minimize the damage to the natural environment.

With her artistic talent, Ms. Minh Hang's works are stories connecting people with nature and all things in life, such as: "Valentine's Garden", "Spring", "Lego City"...

For most people who enjoy virtual reality paintings, their feelings are quite interesting. The first time experiencing virtual reality paintings, Mr. Tran Cong Khanh (District 8, Ho Chi Minh City) happily compared: "Compared to watching 3D movies, watching virtual reality paintings brings a feeling of realism, many times more engaging. Viewers can walk and penetrate every corner of the painting".

Starting to learn how to draw pictures using virtual reality technology to apply in her work, Ms. Ha Huynh Mai (Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City) commented that the pictures have depth and are very vivid...

Virtual reality paintings have begun to gain attention in the market and attract public attention. With an area of up to 3,800 m2, the Van Gogh painting exhibition space at Gigamall Shopping Center (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) is a combination of the world's leading technology applications. Combined with the decorative space, this place recreates "living" points with deep cultural and artistic values from the simple life of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh.

This type of painting also has many outstanding advantages when it can be stored and connected on the internet, thereby saving both cost and time for the purpose of enjoying art.

"Instead of spending all day driving around the city to visit different galleries, or even traveling to other cities or countries, with a virtual reality showroom, viewing artworks through handheld devices, phones, right on the sofa at home will be an interesting experience" - a virtual reality artist commented.

Not easy to draw

Ms. Minh Hang said that depending on the scale and requirements, the time to complete paintings using virtual reality technology is different. For portraits, she usually paints in one day, for landscapes, it takes 1-2 weeks.

According to Ms. Minh Hang, the most difficult color to draw in virtual reality paintings is white. The algorithms that produce light/shadow patches according to the formula are often monotonous, so they can easily cause boredom, and they often have color casts that make white objects look opaque. To maintain the clarity of the white patches, she mixed them with a special brush that is not affected by light, then adjusted the fog mode to create depth.

Although painting with virtual reality technology is not limited by time or location, and the painting can last indefinitely, there are still some limitations, such as: technical problems, devices losing connection causing the painting to suddenly disappear, or software conflicts every time an update is made...

Virtual reality applications in many fields

In the world, virtual reality technology is often applied to create simulated or artificial environments, serving the fields of teaching, medicine, culture, tourism, scientific research, space and space.

Virtual reality technology can help people conduct research in a virtual environment without the need for a real laboratory, significantly reducing costs and time. In the medical field, the use of virtual reality and augmented reality technology allows for the simulation of surgeries, facilitating the training of doctors without risk to patients.
