According to clips and images provided to Dan Viet reporters by a teacher working at Huoi Sang school, Chieng Noi Primary School (Chieng Noi commune, Mai Son district, Son La province), on the morning of August 28, hundreds of parents had to carry their children across the stream to go to school.

Observing through the image, we can see that the stream is still flowing rapidly, the water level is as high as the waist and armpits of adults. The parents, who are strong men, have to work very hard to get their children across the stream.

Speaking with Dan Viet reporter, teacher Bui Xuan Thanh, Vice Principal of Chieng Noi Primary School, directly in charge of Huoi Sang school, said that this morning (August 28), the school allowed all students studying at Huoi Sang school to return to school.

According to Mr. Thanh, because the only suspension bridge leading to Huoi Sang school was washed away by the flood on the morning of July 24, 2024, hundreds of parents had to carry their children across the fierce stream to ensure their children's safety on their way to school.

"Huoi Sang school has 230 students. Of these, 30 students from Huoi Sang village right at the school do not have to be carried, while the remaining 200 students from other villages have to cross the stream to get to school, while 200 parents have to carry their children across the stream. Each parent carries their own child," said Mr. Thanh.

Mr. Thanh added that on the morning of August 28, the school proposed to the Chieng Noi Commune Party Committee to hold a meeting with the villages so that each village could contribute efforts and materials to build a temporary bamboo bridge floating on the water so that students could walk across the stream to school.

Informing Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Mua A Song, Secretary of the Chieng Noi Commune Party Committee, said that he had received a proposal to build a temporary bridge from Chieng Noi Primary School. However, after surveying the stream, which is flowing rapidly and has been deeply eroded due to heavy rain and floods, combined with the erratic weather like this, building a temporary bridge is also very difficult. Tomorrow, the commune will hold a meeting with the school and the villages to find the most feasible solution before the superiors invest in a new bridge.

Many parents are worried that their children’s schooling will be interrupted. Because after the start of the new school year, parents can take their children to school on the first days. However, parents cannot always take their children to school on the following days. We hope that the Party Committee and authorities at all levels will soon invest in a bridge to ensure the safety of students, teachers and people.

As Dan Viet reported earlier, hundreds of students studying at Huoi Sang School and Chieng Noi Primary School are at risk of not being able to go to school because the only bridge leading to the school was swept away by floodwaters on the morning of July 24.

"Now that the bridge has been washed away by the flood, the immediate solution for students to get to school is for parents and teachers to help each other carry students across the stream to get to school," said teacher Bui Xuan Thanh, Vice Principal of Chieng Noi Primary School.
