On the morning of September 25, speaking with a reporter from Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper regarding the controversial case of awarding certificates of merit to students who supported flood victims at Le Quy Don Primary School (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City), Mr. Trinh Vinh Thanh, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Go Vap District, said that he had asked the school to report the incident.

The Department has asked teachers and principals to be careful before deciding to do anything to avoid hurting parents, students and causing public outrage.

The leader of the Go Vap Department of Education and Training added that the rewards must aim to encourage students with outstanding achievements but still create a comfortable mentality for students who are not rewarded.

Previously, on September 24, many parents of children studying at Le Quy Don Primary School said that the school only gave certificates of merit to students who donated VND100,000 or more to support flood victims. Students who donated less than that amount only received letters of merit from their homeroom teachers.

Specifically, responding to the local call, Le Quy Don Primary School launched a fundraising movement to support the Northern people affected by storm No. 3 for staff, teachers, employees, parents and students.

On the morning of September 23, the school awarded certificates of merit to encourage students to actively participate in the above movement. Parents said that their children also participated but did not have certificates or photos. After asking, the homeroom teacher said that students who contributed over 100,000 VND would receive certificates of merit, and students who donated less than 100,000 VND would receive letters of merit from the homeroom teacher.

According to the leadership of Le Quy Don Primary School, out of 2,100 students at the school, 1,500 students received certificates of merit, the remaining students will receive letters of merit. Because the letters of merit were not sent to students in time after the flag-raising ceremony, many parents were upset. The school also admitted that the way it was done was still negligent, causing parents to be upset. As soon as parents commented on this form of reward, the school learned from the experience and made adjustments in the following reward activities.
