At the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc He informed that the city has a total fruit growing area of over 25,000 hectares. In recent times, the agricultural sector of Can Tho City has built key fruit growing areas, focusing on and forming typical branded products. Agricultural products in high-quality growing areas of Can Tho have been exported to demanding and high-value markets.
It is known that the total weight of this batch of green-skinned elephant mangoes exported this time is 2 tons, of which 1 ton will be exported to the Australian market and 1 ton to the US market, by air. Loc Hung Agricultural Cooperative (Co Do district, Can Tho city) is the supplier of this batch of mangoes.
According to Mr. He, this event marks a turning point for the agricultural sector of Can Tho City in response to market demands. At the same time, the successful export of green-skinned elephant mangoes to the Australian and US markets is the result of the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in negotiating and the efforts of businesses in finding contracts for export, supporting farmers in registering growing area codes, providing technical guidance, and implementing purchasing contracts.
To maintain and promote the achieved results, the Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee suggested that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the city should strengthen guidance for farmers to produce according to the technical process set forth by the specialized sector, use agricultural chemicals and materials in accordance with regulations to create safe and high-quality food products; pay more attention to developing concentrated production areas, developing cooperative linkages, creating favorable conditions for businesses to link up to build raw material areas to meet export requirements...
Mr. Phan Van Tay - Director of Loc Hung Agricultural Cooperative - said that the export of the first batch of goods this time is a motivation for farmers to increase production, learn techniques and better comply with the regulations of the importing country as well as the requirements of the purchasing company, to increasingly improve the quality of fruit to meet export standards.
Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department Le Van Thiet said that currently, Vietnamese mangoes are exported to 40 countries around the world, ranking 13th in mango production in the world. Of which, Australia licensed Vietnamese mangoes to be imported into this country in 2017 and in 2019, the United States also agreed to open its market to Vietnamese mangoes.
In recent times, the plant quarantine agencies of the United States, Australia and Vietnam have held many meetings and exchanged techniques to unify plant quarantine measures for mangoes. To date, the parties have reached an agreement on the conditions for importing mangoes and the plan for irradiation treatment when exporting from Vietnam. The procedures for opening the market for Vietnamese mangoes to these two markets have been completed and Vietnam is officially allowed to export fresh mangoes to these markets.
