The price of Hoa Loc mango in many provinces in the Mekong Delta has doubled compared to two months ago.
Ms. Oanh in Binh Thanh District (HCMC) said she just bought Hoa Loc mangoes for the first offering of the month, at 160,000 VND per kilogram. "This is the highest price since the beginning of the year and double that of two months ago," Ms. Oanh said.
Surveys at traditional markets also show that grade 1 Hoa Loc mangoes are sold for 150,000-160,000 VND (2 fruits per kg), grade 2 is about 110,000 VND and grade 3 is 60,000-80,000 VND.
Ms. Phuong - owner of a fruit stall on Hai Ba Trung Street (District 1) - said that recently the quantity of Hoa Loc mangoes arriving at the store has been low. All sales sources have reported very high prices.
"Every day, I can only get 10 kg boxes because the goods imported to the wholesale market are quite limited," said Ms. Phuong.

Similarly, Ms. Lan Anh, owner of a fruit shop at Xom Moi market (Go Vap), said she only dared to import grade 3 goods, because grade 1 and 2 goods were too expensive. "Each kilogram of Hoa Loc mango costs more than imported grapes. Meanwhile, the area where I live is mainly for frugal spending, so purchasing power is weak," Ms. Anh said.
According to records from gardeners, the price of mangoes bought in bulk (including both large and small fruits) at the garden is currently at 55,000-65,000 VND per kg. For selected products, the price will be 10,000-15,000 VND higher.
A report from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Thap shows that the prices of many fruits in September fluctuated strongly compared to the previous month, of which mango was the item with the continuously increasing price.
Specifically, in September, Cat Chu mango in the garden costs 26,500 VND per kg, an increase of 2,000 VND compared to last week, Cat Loa Loc mango costs 90,000 VND per kg, an increase of 5,000 VND compared to last week, and Green-skinned Tuong mango costs 27,500 VND per kg, an increase of 8,500 VND compared to last week.
The reason for the "price fever" of Hoa Loc sand mangoes is that this product is out of season, with low output, so the price has increased. According to the Hoa Loc Dong Thap sand mango cooperative, there are only a few households with products to sell. Most of the mango gardens of the cooperative members have just produced young fruit, so the output sold to the market is low.
In addition, this year, there was a period of heavy rain that caused the flowering trees to fall off, resulting in low fruit set, and a 30% decrease in output compared to previous years. In the first 8 months of the year, Vietnam's mango exports had many advantages while low supply caused prices to escalate.
In addition, at this time, tropical fruits such as lychee, mangosteen, and durian are almost out of season or have already gone out of season, so mangoes face little competition, pushing prices even higher.
