On July 17, Mr. Hoang Quoc Khanh, Secretary of Xuan Trach Commune Youth Union (Bo Trach, Quang Binh), said that this unit had just coordinated with local organizations to complete the re-roofing of a house for a veteran with extremely special circumstances in the area, on the occasion of the War Invalids and Martyrs Day.
"This is our own way of showing gratitude to those who have sacrificed their lives for the Fatherland on the occasion of the upcoming July 27 anniversary," said Mr. Khanh.
Please ask for each tile to roof the house for the veteran
Mr. Tran Minh Tieu (residing in Hamlet 1, Xuan Trach Commune) is a veteran over 70 years old in Hamlet 1, Xuan Trach Commune. Returning from the battlefield, he carried many wounds. As the last years of his life approached, the aftereffects of bombs and bullets further deteriorated his health. For the past few years, he has not been able to stand on his own two feet anymore, and has had to use a wheelchair every day.
Living in the mountainous countryside, the couple could only make ends meet. The house, which was built decades ago and covered with a mixture of tiles and corrugated iron, was also becoming dilapidated. When it rained, water leaked everywhere, forcing the two elderly people to take shelter with their neighbors.
Mr. Tieu's small wish is simply to have a roof to protect him from the sun and rain.

And these days in July, that veteran got his wish when a brand new roof was put up right before the rainy season. This roof came from the most beautiful act of young people in the area.
Mr. Khanh said he had understood Mr. Tieu's situation for many years. However, the conditions of the people in the mountainous area were too difficult, so he did not dare to think about mobilizing support. In early July, after consulting with some young people as well as the aunts and uncles in the veterans' association and the local women's association, Khanh was determined to replace Mr. Tieu's roof.
The young people calculated the total area of the house and estimated that the cost of buying tiles to replace the entire roof would be nearly 20 million VND. "The young people as well as veterans and women were also willing to contribute to replacing the roof tiles to help reduce part of the cost of hiring workers," Khanh said.
To have enough money to buy tiles, Khanh and other young people in the commune went to each well-off family in the commune to mobilize support.
Another campaign with local children working far away in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, and Da Nang was also carried out on social networks.
Each person contributed a few tiles to the group of young people. And after half a month, the money was almost enough to buy tiles for the house.
Gratitude in a practical way
One morning in mid-July, Mr. Tieu’s house suddenly became unusually crowded. The elderly couple sitting in wheelchairs looked out and saw a large truck loaded with new tiles gradually backing into the alley. Mr. Tieu could only look up at his wife and smile contentedly.

Working hard from morning to night, dozens of young people, veterans, and women took turns removing the old roof tiles and then laying new ones. The old veteran seemed to have been given new life.
At the end of the day, everyone gathered around to chat with the veteran. And this is what the young people of this mountainous commune look forward to the most.
"At first, I also thought about approaching July 27 by visiting and burning incense like every year. But then when I saw Mr. Tieu's dilapidated roof, I suddenly thought that this was the most important thing to do to show gratitude. And in the future, we will continue to do it this way...", Mr. Khanh said.
