C SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE
At the latest graduation ceremony of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics in March, the whole school had a total of 4,934 graduates, of which 2,906 were excellent and 107 were excellent, accounting for 61.06%. Previously, in March 2023, the school's graduation rate of excellent and excellent was 48.1% (2,057 excellent, 46 excellent out of a total of 4,372 students) and only 42 students graduated with average grades, accounting for 9.6%. At the June 2023 graduation ceremony, the rate of excellent and excellent graduates also accounted for 41.88% (1,090 excellent, 99 excellent out of a total of 2,839 students). Compared to the school's June 2015 graduation, out of 2,584 new graduates, there were only 2 excellent students (0.08%), and 631 good students (24.42%), less than half of the current number.
Notably, at Hanoi Foreign Trade University, among more than 1,000 new graduates in the first batch of 2024, 34.4% graduated with honors, 48.2% graduated with honors, and the total number of honors and excellent graduates was 82.6%. The percentage of good and average graduates was only 17.4%.
The graduation ranking rate of students has a large difference between schools and majors.
The graduation rate of good and excellent students at Hoa Sen University in February was nearly 50%, while in August 2022 it was only over 30%. At Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance, this rate in the December 2023 graduation in the majors of business administration, marketing, international business... was 40.3%.
Meanwhile, according to data provided by the University Training Department, the overall graduation ranking rate of the entire Ho Chi Minh City National University system in 2023 shows that only 1.5% are excellent; 28.6% are good; 56.7% are fair and 13.2% are average. Thus, of nearly 15,000 graduates in the entire system, the rate of excellent and good students accounts for 30.1%.
Many other universities also recorded a low number of excellent and excellent graduates, around 20%. For example, last year, the percentage of excellent graduates at Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City was 0.28% and excellent graduates was 22.34%.
In the 3 graduation ceremonies in 2023 of Saigon University, out of a total of 3,564 students, 666 graduated with honors and distinctions (accounting for over 18.6%). Similarly, the number of excellent and distinctions at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education is also quite low. In the July 2023 graduation ceremony, 2,025 students were awarded degrees, of which 219 were excellent and distinctions (accounting for about 10.8%).
For many years, the proportion of good and average graduates at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law has always been over 80%. Specifically, in the August 2023 graduation ceremony, out of a total of 1,482 full-time students, there were only 6 excellent students and 258 good students. The number of average and good students accounted for the majority with over 82%, while the number of good and excellent students accounted for less than 18%. In the October 2022 graduation ceremony, this school also recorded only 0.39% excellent students and 15.66% good students. In 2021, the rate of excellent students was lower at 0.17% and good at 12.02%.
In many graduation ceremonies of Ton Duc Thang University, the percentage of students ranked as excellent or better only accounted for over 10%. In the graduation ceremony in May this year, the school awarded degrees to 3,088 students but there was only 1 excellent student and 203 good students (accounting for 6.6%). Previously, in the ceremony in November 2023 for 3,577 students, only 421 people graduated with excellent and honors (accounting for 11.7%). In May 2023, out of nearly 2,300 students awarded degrees, only 267 students were excellent and honors (accounting for 11.6%). Previously, in October 2022, out of more than 3,100 students graduating from this school, only 1 student was ranked as excellent and 374 students were ranked as good (accounting for 12%).
Students in practice
N MANY FIELDS DO NOT HAVE OUTSTANDING STUDENTS
In the September graduation ceremony of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering last year, among more than 800 students receiving degrees, the percentage of excellent and good students was only over 5%. Students with good grades also accounted for less than 36% of the entire batch. Also at this school, in the April 2023 graduation ceremony, among more than 1,200 new engineers and architects, there were only 7 excellent graduates and 69 good students (over 6% of the entire batch).
In particular, there were graduations where there were no excellent students. For example, in the graduation ceremony in October last year, the Faculty of Medicine (Ho Chi Minh City National University) had 132 medical students and 55 pharmacy students graduating, with no excellent students. Of the total 187 graduates, only 10.7% were excellent. Of which, over 6% were in medicine and nearly 22% in pharmacy.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education did not have any excellent graduates in the 2020-2021 school year, the percentage of excellent graduates was only 6.91%. In the 2021-2022 school year, the school also did not have any excellent graduates, the percentage of excellent graduates was 11.84%. In the 2022-2023 school year, the school had excellent graduates but only accounted for 0.06% and excellent graduates accounted for 14.36%.
QUALITY INPUT, GOOD OUTPUT?
Speaking with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Quang Hung, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, said that there are a number of reasons why the number of students graduating with honors and excellent grades at the school has increased in recent years.
"Firstly, the school's input quality is much better than before, as shown by the high admission scores. Candidates achieving such scores demonstrate good learning ability, not to mention that they are increasingly proactive, sharp, creative and self-studying. Especially in the context of technological development, students have many favorable conditions for learning," Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Quang Hung commented.
The second reason, according to Mr. Hung, is that many of today's students have developed very good goals, plans and learning paths. "The university environment is dynamic, with academic advisors to closely monitor and support students in achieving their goals. In addition, the university's training programs are accredited domestically and internationally, which is also a factor that increases the quality of training," Mr. Hung added.
However, at Ho Chi Minh City National University, the percentage of good and excellent students is not high despite the high entrance score. The competition ratio for regular university admission in 2023 at this university is 1/3.71. The average score for regular university admission (excluding priority points and coefficients) in 2023 is the lowest at 21.93 points and the highest at 28.14 points. However, the graduation ranking results of students as analyzed above are not high.
Also a school with high input, the rate of good and excellent graduates of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education is around 25 - 30%. Master Le Phan Quoc, Deputy Head of Training Department, said: "Graduate student classification is the result of the training process combined with input. A normal classification result is when the proportion of students at a fairly good level accounts for the majority, the two ranges above and below this level must be lower". Therefore, Master Quoc said: "If there is too big a difference in this rate, it may be that the input, training process and output standards do not match. The school needs to review the training program, find the cause and make appropriate adjustments".
In general assessment of university graduation rankings, Dr. Thai Doan Thanh, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that the results of a university depend on many factors. For example, which field and major the school trains. Because in general, schools and majors that train in economics, business management will have easier learning than technical technology majors. When the learning is easier, the learning results will be higher. (continued)
Reduce average ranking of students
In some schools, the percentage of excellent and good students has not increased much, but the average percentage has decreased a lot. For example, the 2017-2021 course of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry had 0.36% excellent students and 12.04% good students, while in the 2018-2022 course, this percentage was 1.25% and 28.05%, and in the 2019-2023 course, it was 1.78% and 36.76%. However, the average graduation rate over the years has decreased from 12.55% (2021) to 2.01% (2022) and only 1.19% in 2023.
At the graduation ceremony of the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University) held at the end of August 2023, out of 1,482 new graduates, there were 6 excellent students, 258 excellent students, 1,155 good students and only 63 average students.
