As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, traditional cake shops on Thuy Khue Street (Tay Ho District, Hanoi) are bustling again, with people lining up for hours in the evening just to buy traditional moon cakes.
According to Dan Viet, after many quiet days due to storms and rain, Hanoians flocked to Thuy Khue Street to buy traditional moon cakes. At around 8:00 p.m. on September 15 (ie August 13 of the lunar calendar), at a traditional moon cake shop on Thuy Khue Street (Tay Ho District, Hanoi), the street was jammed, people were lining up to buy cakes.
People lined up in 5 rows, taking turns waiting to buy traditional moon cakes.
The store staff said that this year, due to the heavy impact of storms and floods, the number of customers has decreased significantly compared to previous years. Only in the last few days, when the storms and floods have subsided, has the store been able to welcome customers again.
The store mainly sells two types of moon cakes: sticky rice cakes and baked cakes with prices ranging from 25,000 - 80,000 VND depending on size.
The ingredients that make up this special mixed filling include: pork fat, lotus jam, Chinese sausage, melon seeds, lemon leaves, etc., along with a crust made according to a special recipe to create the traditional flavor of old Hanoi.
According to observations, during low season, on average, each person has to wait in line for 15-20 minutes to get their turn to buy. During peak season, they can wait for hours.
The store staff is very crowded and works tirelessly.
About 100 meters away, a store of the same brand also had images of people lining up to buy traditional moon cakes.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu (72 years old, Ba Dinh district) shared: "I have been buying cakes here for nearly 20 years. I feel that the cakes here have the right traditional flavor of moon cakes. I got used to eating here and then when I ate elsewhere, I felt it was not delicious, so even if I had to wait in line for hours, I still came to buy them."
According to the store staff, moon cakes can be kept for 10 days, while sticky rice cakes can be kept for about 5 days after being taken out of the oven.
Customers often buy 10-20 cakes at a time to enjoy or give as gifts, especially, there are people who buy dozens of boxes at a time (each box has 4 cakes). Ms. Linh (Cau Giay district) said that because many people asked to buy, she bought 8 boxes of cakes.
While these two bakeries are selling non-stop, the other brands on the same street have few customers.
On the opposite side of the street, buyers' motorbikes were scattered all over the sidewalk.
