Ukrainian Minister of Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin has confirmed that German defense giant Rheinmetall will produce advanced Lynx infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) in Ukraine. The announcement was made during the Reconstruction of Ukraine Conference in Berlin on June 11-12.
Mr. Kamyshin revealed that the first “Lantern” is expected to be produced in Ukraine by the end of this year. The project is expected to be funded by the German government, which has shown consistent support for Ukrainian initiatives.
“At the conference, the German arms company Rheinmetall announced that we are starting to produce Lynx BMPs in Ukraine. The first such vehicle will be produced in Ukraine by the end of this year,” Kamyshin said.
Boyevaya Mashina Pekhoty (BMP) is the Soviet designation for an IFV built on a tank chassis.
Rheinmetall's Lynx infantry fighting vehicle is recognized as the most advanced infantry fighting vehicle available today. Its next-generation design and modular nature make the Lynx very popular among countries looking to modernize their IFV fleet.
The modular design of the Lynx IFV allows for widespread use of components across specialized variants, allowing for precise adaptation to specific missions and threats. This design also reduces the training and logistics burden, improving operational readiness. Regardless of configuration, the Lynx maintains its core capabilities, ensuring consistency in operations and support.
The Lynx is equipped with a LANCE turret, which can accommodate a 30mm or 35mm gun, along with an anti-tank missile launcher to suit customer requirements. The KF41 variant, launched in 2018, boasts “a spacious interior that is unmatched by any vehicle in its class,” and can accommodate a crew of three and carry up to nine infantrymen.
“The Lynx KF41 is more than just a new, highly advanced vehicle: it is the ultimate platform for the future, combining outstanding protection with great firepower and unrivalled mobility in a unique modular concept,” Rheinmetall said in advertising its product.
The Lynx has so far only been produced in Germany and Hungary. This cooperation between Ukraine and Rheinmetall marks an important step in strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities and demonstrates Berlin's commitment to supporting Kiev's strategic industrial initiatives.
The production of Lynx infantry fighting vehicles in Ukraine is expected to enhance the combat readiness of the Eastern European country's army and contribute to ongoing defense efforts.
On June 11, Mr. Kamyshin also announced that Rheinmetall and Ukroboronprom, a Ukrainian defense manufacturer, had opened the first joint workshop in Ukraine to repair foreign equipment and produce “new models of armored vehicles.”
“Right now, this will help repair foreign equipment faster and, accordingly, return it to the front line faster. In the future, new models of armored vehicles will be produced here,” the Ukrainian official said .
