Promoting sustainable development in rural areas
Since its establishment in 2021, the Best Tourist Villages Network has grown significantly, now comprising 254 villages from 59 countries in 5 regions. Of these, 184 villages have been recognized as Best Tourist Villages and 70 villages have participated in the upgrading program.
This remarkable growth is a testament to the relevance of the initiative and the shared commitment of its members to promoting sustainable development, preserving heritage and enhancing community well-being.
According to Sandra Carvão, Director of Market Intelligence, Policy and Competitiveness at UN Tourism, tourism is an important tool to integrate and empower rural communities, protect and cherish their rich cultural heritage while promoting sustainable development.
Speaking at the opening session, Ms. Zoritsa Urosevic - Deputy Secretary-General of UN Tourism said that the presence of representatives of member villages today reflects the tireless dedication in promoting rural development through tourism.
UN Tourism remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting member villages in these efforts, recognising the enormous value that member villages bring to the global tourism landscape.
“As we look ahead, I am confident that this meeting will pave the way for even greater achievements. I encourage members to play an active role in the discussions in the coming days, as the value and success of this network; and sustainable rural development globally will be shaped by the ideas, experiences and engagement of its members,” emphasized Ms. Zoritsa Urosevic.
Space for exchanging ideas and experiences
The Best Tourism Villages Initiative is part of the United Nations Programme on Tourism for Rural Development. The programme works to promote development and inclusion in rural areas, combat depopulation, promote innovation and value chain integration through tourism, and encourage sustainable practices.
The Best Villages Tourism Network is a space for the exchange of experiences and good practices, learning and opportunities among its members; and welcomes the contributions of experts and public and private sector partners involved in promoting tourism as a driver for rural development.
This year, seven villages from the Best Tourist Village Upgrade Program have achieved recognition as Best Tourist Villages. Through the upgrade program, villages receive mentoring to improve their lowest-scoring assessment areas and can apply through a fast-track process to be recognized as Best Tourist Villages.
The call for applications for the fifth edition will take place in early 2025, opening up new opportunities for rural destinations to share inspiring initiatives and be globally recognised as leaders in rural development.
