Building a project to develop dragon fruit in the province by 2030

On the morning of June 9, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Hong Hai chaired a working session, listening to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development report on the Project on developing dragon fruit in the province until 2030 (project). Attending were leaders of a number of departments, branches, and sectors, representatives of enterprises and cooperatives producing and processing dragon fruit. At the same time, online connections were made in Tuy Phong, Bac Binh, Ham Thuan Bac, Ham Thuan Nam, and Ham Tan districts.

According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, dragon fruit is identified by the Provincial People's Committee as one of the four strategic products of the province, and by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as the leading specialty crop among 11 types of fruit in the strategy for developing Vietnamese vegetables, flowers and fruits.

Currently, the whole province has over 27,700 hectares of dragon fruit, of which more than 11,000 hectares are certified to meet VietGAP standards and 560 hectares are certified to GlobalGAP. Binh Thuan dragon fruit has contributed greatly to the transformation of crop structure, is an important product to increase farmers' income... However, the current development of dragon fruit is hiding many problems in both production and consumption, which need to be clarified to help with management as well as promote sustainable production development...

Therefore, the objective of the Project is to stabilize the area of ​​dragon fruit, develop sustainably, increase value, maintain and promote the Binh Thuan dragon fruit brand. At the same time, develop dragon fruit according to good production processes, towards organic, multi-value production...

After listening to the summary report of the project, representatives of enterprises, cooperatives, departments, branches and localities contributed many opinions about the current situation and solutions for dragon fruit development. In particular, focusing on solving the output of dragon fruit when entering the main season, preserving and purchasing white-fleshed dragon fruit varieties. Opinions also emphasized the need to focus on the quality of dragon fruit rather than quantity and have breakthroughs in technology transfer, developing consumption markets, etc.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Hong Hai emphasized that the Project on developing dragon fruit in the province until 2030 has received great attention from all levels, sectors and localities. Provincial leaders basically agreed on the report assessing the current status of dragon fruit development in the province. At the same time, he said that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development needs to clarify some information on the current status of dragon fruit such as total area, data on VietGAP and GlobalGAP dragon fruit, old dragon fruit area, current status of varieties and consumption markets. Thereby, assessing and setting appropriate targets for the coming time.

The leaders of the Provincial People's Committee requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to synthesize and absorb comments to complete the draft project and submit it to the Provincial People's Committee for consideration. At the same time, it is important to pay attention to building GlobalGAP dragon fruit production models in areas with large areas, capacity and potential. In parallel, research on dragon fruit processing, in addition to export, should focus on domestic demand, including serving the needs of tourists. Comrade Nguyen Hong Hai requested the Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association to better demonstrate its leading role, to connect businesses, promote trade, and to grasp the needs of consumer markets and local capacity to have orientations and recommendations for producers and businesses.

Also within the framework of the working session, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Hong Hai awarded the Asian Record Certificate for dragon fruit specialty to the Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association. It is known that in May 2023, Binh Thuan was honored to receive the Asian Record Certificate for dragon fruit specialty and fish sauce brand Con Ca Vang Phan Thiet, established and recognized by the Vietnam Record Institute.
