'Greening' industrial production creates competitive advantages for businesses

Greening industry is becoming a development trend that brings efficiency in economic growth, solves social problems and overcomes the consequences of environmental pollution. Enterprises that want to develop sustainably and increase their competitive advantage must transform themselves.

Sharing at the seminar "Greening" chemical and fertilizer production: Opportunities for effective competition for businesses organized by Industry and Trade Magazine on October 24, Mr. Phung Ha, Chairman of the Vietnam Fertilizer Association said that green production is an inevitable trend for all industries, especially fertilizer is one of the most important agricultural materials in the agricultural sector.

According to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), fertilizers account for about 40 - 70% of the input value. When it comes to green production, that is, associated with green agriculture, the input must save energy and natural resources and the output must ensure the environment and be sustainable.

However, currently, the use of fertilizers is wasteful. According to statistics from the International Fertilizer Association (IFA), in the world, the average use is about 135 - 140 kg/ha, in Vietnam it is up to 400 kg/ha. To produce green, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, businesses need to pay attention to the production of high-performance, organic, microbial fertilizers... to focus on green production.

From a business perspective, Mr. Phung Ngoc Bo, Head of Technical Department of Vietnam Chemical Group, said that in recent times, the Chemical Group has focused on using energy economically and efficiently, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving fuel, treating waste and recycling... to implement "greening" in production.

“When implementing ‘greening’ in production, businesses have also achieved many results. Danang Rubber Company is one of the pioneers in the Group that has built a tire recycling plant with a capacity of 110,000 tires/year and is operating effectively. Along with that, ash and slag from thermal power plants in the Group have met standards and regulations and have been used in other industries. In particular, gypsum waste, tire scraps from the Group and its member units have basically been recycled and used for other industries,” said Mr. Phung Ngoc Bo.

From a management perspective, Ms. Nguyen Thanh Phuong, Department of Industrial Safety and Environment, Ministry of Industry and Trade, said that greening industry is still a fairly new concept and does not have a specific definition in any legal document. Therefore, there are no specific regulations, so both state management agencies and businesses still face difficulties in implementation.

“We do not have specific regulations on what greening is and how to implement it, so the policies and support mechanisms for businesses are not specific. Besides, although Vietnam has policies towards greening industry, using natural resources effectively, and using energy economically and efficiently. However, the current application is still small and not uniform,” said Ms. Nguyen Thanh Phuong.

In the coming time, to promote the greening of industries in general and the chemical industry in particular, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to direct and implement key tasks assigned in the Law on Environmental Protection and detailed regulations and guidance documents on the Law on the development of environmental industries and response to climate change in the industry and trade sector...

In particular, the Ministry also focuses on developing and implementing the Greening of Industry Project for the period up to 2030. Currently, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is focusing on researching and proposing basic contents related to the greening of industries such as the concept of greening of industry, a set of indicators to determine the level of greening of industries to assess the current status of greening of industry, thereby identifying the advantages as well as difficulties and obstacles in the current period, to propose new solutions and appropriate policies in promoting the greening of industries in Vietnam for the period up to 2030.
