At least four people were shot dead on a subway train in Chicago (USA) on the morning of September 2 (local time). The victims were believed to be homeless, all passengers on the train. The suspect was arrested about an hour and a half after the shooting.
CNN quoted Forest Park Deputy Police Chief Chris Chin as saying that the shooting occurred as the train was moving into the Forest Park train station. Of the four victims, three were in one car and the fourth was in another. Three died at the scene, the fourth was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and later died.
After the shooting, the suspect likely got off the train at the Harlem stop on the CTA's Blue Line and then boarded the Pink Line, where he was taken into police custody. Chicago police developed a description of the suspect based on surveillance footage and arrested the suspect along with a gun. The CTA's Blue Line runs 27 miles between O'Hare International Airport and Forest Park, passing through dozens of neighborhoods and downtown Chicago.
In recent years, guns have become the leading cause of death for Americans aged 1-19, surpassing traffic accidents.
According to data from the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a nonprofit organization that tracks shootings, in 2024 alone, there were at least 378 mass shootings across the United States. GVA recorded at least 11,463 people killed in gun violence. There were an average of 1.5 mass shootings per day in the United States in 2024.
