On the afternoon of April 17, at a regular press conference at the Ho Chi Minh City Press Center, representatives of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha provided the latest information on preparations for the 2025 United Nations Day of Vesak (Vesak 2025).
Veneration of Buddha Shakyamuni's relics for 20 days in Vietnam
Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien - Vice President, General Secretary of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Vice President, General Secretary of the National Organizing Committee of the United Nations Vesak 2025 - said that the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni (India's national treasure) will be enshrined at Thanh Tam Pagoda - Vietnam Buddhist Academy, Lang Le Park (Le Minh Xuan Commune, Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) from May 2 to 8;
At Ba Den Mountain (Tay Ninh Province) from May 8 to 13; at Quan Su Pagoda ( Hanoi ) from May 13 to 16; at Tam Chuc Pagoda (Ha Nam) from May 17 to 21. After that, the relics of Buddha Shakyamuni were brought back to India.
Previously, at the 5th (extraordinary) conference of the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha's Council of Evidence, term IX (2022 - 2027), the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha's Council of Evidence announced a resolution to invite the heart relics of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc to be enshrined at the Vietnam National Temple (HCMC) during the 2025 United Nations Vesak Festival for monks, nuns, Buddhists and people to worship.
Afterwards, the heart relics of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc will be enshrined and worshiped forever at Da Bao stupa - a monument commemorating the 1963 Dharma persecution, in the grounds of Viet Nam Quoc Tu.
Regarding the facilities prepared for Vesak 2025 , Venerable Thich Duc Thien said that the 2,700-seat main hall - where the opening and closing ceremonies will take place - and 5 halls where scientific seminars will take place have been completed.
The campus area used for cultural festivals, flower lantern ceremonies, Buddhist art exhibitions, etc. basically meets the requirements and is on schedule.
It is expected that on April 15, the facilities will be handed over to specialized departments for equipment installation and completed on April 28.
Within the framework of Vesak 2025, there will be an international art exchange program with the participation of art troupes from countries and territories: China, India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Korea, Vietnam... taking place at the Sa La Theater (Thu Duc city).
Main activities at Vesak 2025
May 2 : Procession and enshrinement of Buddha's relics, the national treasure of India, at Thanh Tam Pagoda, Lang Le Park and Vietnam Buddhist Academy, Le Minh Xuan campus, Binh Chanh district.
May 3: Opening ceremony to worship Buddha's relics, the national treasure of India, at Thanh Tam Pagoda (Binh Chanh District) and the heart relics of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc at Viet Nam Quoc Tu (District 10).
May 4: Opening of Buddhist cultural exhibition events at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy campus.
May 6: Opening of the United Nations Vesak 2025 .
May 7: International scientific conference session of Vesak Festival .
May 8: Closing of Vesak Festival , afternoon visit at SunWorld Cultural Area Ba Den Mountain ( Tay Ninh ), evening return to Ho Chi Minh City.
May 9: Sending international delegates home.
The 2025 Vesak Festival is co-organized by the International Organizing Committee for the United Nations Day of Vesak (ICDV) and the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.
This is the fourth time Vietnam has hosted the event, previously in Hanoi (2008), Ninh Binh (2014) and Ha Nam (2019).
It is expected that 85 countries and territories will participate in Vesak 2025 in Vietnam. This is the 20th time the festival has been held.
Vesak 2025 takes place from May 6 to 8 at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Ho Chi Minh City.
The main message of Vesak 2025 in Vietnam is "Solidarity and tolerance for human dignity: Buddhist wisdom for world peace and sustainable development".
