In early March 2025, the education organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) announced the results of the rankings of 55 fields in 5 groups of fields of 1,747 higher education institutions with about 21,000 training programs. In which, for the first time, the field of Sociology of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi ranked 301/375 in the world. With this ranking, Vietnam's Sociology industry has made its mark on the map of the best universities training in Sociology in the world.
There are 375 universities included in the 2025 ranking of the best places to study sociology, with the majority of the top 20 universities located in the United States. The University of Oxford, ranked second, is the top university for sociology in the UK, while the University of Toronto (ranked 14th) is the top university outside the UK and US, followed by the University of Hong Kong at 17th.
The QS WUR Rankings by Subject 2025 are based on 5 criteria with weights customized to suit each field, including: (1) Academic Reputation; (2) Employer Reputation; (3) Citations per paper; (4) H-index measuring the productivity and impact of scientific publications of the teaching staff; (5) International Research Network. With these criteria, the Sociology field of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is ranked based on a number of outstanding criteria that the Sociology field has achieved in recent years.
The Sociology Department has been accredited according to the AUN-QA standards twice in 2018 and 2023. The Sociology Department periodically surveys stakeholders (alumni, employers, learners, lecturers/professional managers, support staff) and has received many positive reviews on the quality of human resource training, the applicability of the Sociology Department in the fields of economics, culture, society, communication, entrepreneurship and the high adaptability in the work of students and trainees.

The Department of Sociology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, is ranked in the same group as other universities in developed countries around the world, such as universities in Europe (Laval University, Canada; Paris-Saclay University, France; Umea University, Sweden; Aberdeen University, UK; Jena University, Germany); universities in the United States (Washington State University; Washington University St. Louis, Pullman University, Oregon University, Pittsburgh University, Vanderbilt University...). The Department of Sociology, Faculty of Sociology, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU (from March 2025, renamed Faculty of Sociology and Social Work), formerly the Department of Sociology, was established in 1986 (under the Faculty of Philosophy, Hanoi National University), and the undergraduate Sociology class was trained at Hanoi National University (1988-1990). This was the first sociology class trained since the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Initial Sociological studies were also conducted at Hanoi National University during this period. These can be seen as the first steps in laying important foundations, opening up opportunities for research and teaching on issues in political, economic, social and cultural life from a Sociological approach in Vietnam.
In 1991, the Minister of Education and Training signed Decision No. 2494/TCCB to establish the Faculty of Sociology and Psychology. Immediately after that, the Faculty was assigned the task of training bachelors, masters and doctors (PhD) in Sociology, contributing to the training and development of high-quality human resources for the Sociology sector in Vietnam. With more than 30 years of establishment and development, the Faculty of Sociology is an environment for training and nurturing generations of mature lecturers. There have been 3 lecturers awarded the title of Professor of Sociology; 3 lecturers awarded the title of Excellent Teacher; 7 Associate Professors (PGS), 12 PhDs; 3 lecturers awarded Certificates of Merit by the Prime Minister. Many lecturers of the Faculty have been awarded certificates of merit by the Minister of Education and Training, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, and the Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

Currently, the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work has a high-quality staff of 21 permanent staff and lecturers, including 4 Associate Professors, 12 PhDs, 2 PhD students, 2 Masters, and 1 Bachelor. Since 1992, the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, University of Social Sciences and Humanities has trained 2,693 full-time Bachelors of Sociology, 1,114 part-time Bachelors of Sociology, 529 Masters of Sociology and 111 PhD students.
Not only does the Faculty have impressive training results in the two fields of Sociology and Social Work, but its scientific research activities have also achieved many achievements that many research institutes dream of. The Faculty has two strong research groups at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi level (Gender, Population and Environment Research Group and Social Security and Social Work Research Group).
Every year, the two strong research groups successfully organize many seminars, publish monographs, and publish many domestic and international scientific works in prestigious journals. Members of the strong research group participate in many high-quality international scientific exchanges. The Faculty of Sociology and Social Work focuses on many important areas such as social policy, sociology of education, gender sociology, sociology of health, sociology of family, sustainable development and social work... Lecturers of the Faculty have chaired 10 state-level scientific and technological topics; 8 topics under the National Science and Technology Fund; about 30 topics at the ministerial and provincial levels, and many international cooperation projects. Nearly 50 ISI/Scopus articles and 56 other international publications have been published; 236 domestic articles and dozens of policy consulting reports for ministries and branches; 42 monographs and textbooks have been published.
In the era of national development and the context of streamlining the apparatus, and Decision 57 of the Politburo on breakthrough development of science and technology, innovation and digital transformation, the Faculty of Sociology changed its name to the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, linking training with practice, the teaching staff combined training and scientific research, aiming at the goal of training high-quality human resources to meet the human resource requirements in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and the digital transformation period.
