Norwich fans are waiting to see if Wilshere can make a positive change and get the team back on the winning track. |
On the afternoon of April 22nd, Norwich City announced the departure of head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup with only two rounds remaining in the 2024/25 Championship (English First Division) season. Former Arsenal midfielder Wilshere will serve as interim coach until the end of the season.
Wilshere, 33, will work alongside assistants Tony Roberts and Nick Stanley during this period. This marks a new turning point in Wilshere's young but promising coaching career. He was once one of the most promising midfielders in English football, with 197 appearances for Arsenal and 38 caps for England.
However, persistent injuries interrupted his playing career, leading to his retirement in 2022. After hanging up his boots, Wilshere quickly transitioned to coaching, beginning his journey to build a reputation in his new role.
This will be Wilshere's first time as a professional first-team manager. Prior to this, he began his coaching career at the Arsenal academy, taking on the role of U18 team in 2022. Under his leadership, the Arsenal youth team displayed an attractive attacking style of play and developed many promising young talents.
Becoming interim manager at Norwich City will be a great opportunity for Wilshere to prove his abilities in a professional football environment. Norwich are having a rather poor season in the Championship this year, currently sitting 14th in the table.
If successful in his interim role, Wilshere could open the door to permanent coaching positions at bigger clubs. Previously, a former Arsenal teammate of Wilshere's, Aaron Ramsey, also accepted an interim manager position at Cardiff City.
The Welsh midfielder is expected to help Cardiff escape their precarious situation in the Championship, as they sit second to last in the table and are at a disadvantage in the relegation battle.
