Walker's honeymoon period at AC Milan seems to have ended abruptly. The veteran English defender couldn't hide his disappointment after the 1-2 defeat against Napoli on March 31st, and even exchanged harsh words with teammate Felix on the pitch.
When the second half began, he was caught loudly criticizing Felix. He pulled Felix aside and said, "Pass the ball, we're not Messi." Walker's short but sarcastic remark immediately went viral on social media.
Felix, after a run of 10 consecutive games without scoring, only played for another 10 minutes in the second half before being substituted by coach Sergio Conceicao. Meanwhile, Walker was also gradually feeling the difficulties of playing for his new team.
After a dream start in Serie A with three unbeaten matches, consecutive starts, and only two goals conceded, Walker was once seen as a breath of fresh air for Milan's defense. But things quickly changed. He was substituted after the first half against Verona, and then benched when Milan lost 1-2 to Lazio. In the match against Napoli, Walker was substituted again in the 79th minute, and was given a 4.5 rating by the Milan squad .
This page commented: "The defense played poorly overall, but Walker made a direct mistake in the second goal by marking Buongiorno too closely, allowing Lukaku to avoid being caught offside despite Milan pushing forward. A big mistake for an experienced player."
AC Milan currently sit 9th in Serie A, 20 points behind league leaders Inter. Their Coppa Italy semi-final first leg against Inter midweek will be Milan's last chance to salvage a season in crisis.
