Dang Doan Sang (31 years old, from Quang Ninh) had a wonderful time in Indonesia with the most "once in a lifetime" and challenging journey he has ever taken.
That is to explore Kawah Ijen - the world's largest acid lake and conquer Bromo - one of the 5 most beautiful active volcanoes in Asia, located in the east of Java island.
Doan Sang and his group of friends visited Kawah Ijen acid lake (left photo) and Bromo volcano.
Java is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire. There are about 40 active volcanoes on the island. Among them, Bromo - a volcano nestled in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park - is one of the famous tourist destinations, attracting many foreign visitors to experience it every year.
The view from afar covers the entire Bromo volcano emitting white smoke. This is also the location that Doan Sang and his group of friends chose as a camping spot, spending the night to capture the picturesque sunrise moment.
Coming to Java Island, in addition to conquering Mount Bromo, visitors can also explore the Kawah Ijen acid lake (in the Ijen volcano area, between the Bondowoso and Banyuwangi plateaus), located at an altitude of 2,300m above sea level.
Kawah Ijen Lake is turquoise in color, always covered with a thick white smoke and the air smells of rotten eggs (the smell of hydrogen sulfide compounds). The lake contains up to 36 million cubic meters of acid solution.
Doan Sang said that to go to Indonesia, he chose to take a connecting flight from Hanoi to Bali, transit at Changi Airport (Singapore) and then continue to Ngurah Rai International Airport, Indonesia.

Here, 9X booked a land-tour (a type of tour that includes all services at the destination of the journey, not including airfare/transportation to that location) to two locations: Bromo volcano and Kawah Ijen acid lake.
“My group of friends and I set off from Bali, traveling by car for about 450km, taking more than 9 hours to reach the foot of Mount Bromo. After showering and resting, at around 11pm, the group continued traveling by Jeep for 2 hours to reach the campsite on the opposite mountain - a location where we could see the whole view of Mount Bromo.
Here, we set up tents, slept overnight in the harsh cold of about 7-8 degrees Celsius, then woke up at 4am to catch the sunrise. Then, at around 8am, we continued on the Jeep for about 45 minutes to reach the trekking point to the top of the mountain," Sang shared about the first difficulty in the journey to conquer the Bromo volcano.
According to local guides, Jeeps are the only means of transport that can travel through the dangerous terrain in the area from the foot of the mountain to the top of Bromo.
According to the young man, from the trekking point, it will take tourists about 1 hour to reach the top of the mountain. From this point, the group must cross a hot and dusty sand desert for about 2km, then climb 250 more steps to reach the Bromo crater.
“The final difficulty is that when you reach the top of the mountain, you will find it difficult to breathe due to the low oxygen level and the unpleasant smell of SO2 gas. Many tourists cannot stand it and have to turn back and move down the mountain,” the 9X added.

The young man from Quang Ninh said that the best time to admire the peak of Mount Bromo is at dawn, when the sun has just risen. Therefore, the group of friends decided to camp and sleep overnight on the opposite mountain to wake up early in the morning, without wasting energy.
Tourists can also choose to stay at homestays at the foot of Mount Bromo and then start driving to the sunrise viewing spot at 3am. However, with this option, when arriving, tourists may face the risk of traffic jams due to the large number of people and vehicles coming here, not to mention the quite narrow pass that only has enough space for two cars to pass each other.
“And when you get there, you will have to jostle and queue to get a good position, convenient for sightseeing and taking pictures,” Sang said.
When going through the sand desert, if you feel too tired, you can book a horse riding service from the locals and get free photo support.
To get to Kawah Ijen acid lake, the 9X had to wake up at 3am, climb more than 2 hours of steep mountain roads in a space filled with the smell of rotten eggs - H2S
After trekking, leaving Bromo volcano, the Vietnamese guy moved through the poetic Savana field and enjoyed the picturesque scenery.
After conquering Mount Bromo, Sang and his group also spent time exploring Kawah Ijen - the world's largest acid lake as well as traveling in Bali, experiencing the beautiful roads and beaches here.
The total cost for the 5-day, 4-night trip is about 16 million VND, including: 5 million VND for round-trip airfare; 5 million VND for land-tour and about 6 million VND for food, accommodation and transportation services at the destinations...
