Since the beginning of the year, brackish water aquaculture farmers in Ha Tinh have made great efforts to overcome difficulties to harvest nearly 8,000 tons of various products.
In the first months of this year, in addition to extreme weather, the water supply in brackish water aquaculture areas concentrated in Loc Ha contained dangerous viruses that cause diseases in farmed animals.

The most dangerous of these is white-leg shrimp (the most important farming species in the area) suffering from white spot disease, hepatopancreatic necrosis, pink body, slow growth... occurring in many places, including facilities invested in intensive farming, high technology in cement tanks, in net houses, and tarpaulin-lined ponds.
In particular, the white spot disease outbreak occurred in 2.5 hectares of 5 households in Mai Phu commune, forcing the households and specialized agencies to treat it with chlorine chemicals.
With the determination to maintain livelihoods and stabilize production, aquaculture farmers in Loc Ha have made efforts to overcome negative factors and minimize impacts on production. In addition to maintaining the stability of existing farming areas, Mai Phu commune has built 3 modern farming models and initially achieved good results: high-tech shrimp farming on a scale of 10 hectares by Hong Anh Company, high-tech crab farming using indoor plastic boxes on a scale of 1,000 boxes by Nguyen Van Quang and 2-phase crab farming on a scale of 1 hectare by Mr. To Dinh Le.
With the good exploitation of 291 hectares of brackish water surface land, in more than 9 months of 2023, Loc Ha has harvested 1,778 tons of various products, of which white-leg shrimp is about 360 tons, the rest are mussels, crabs, fish, tiger shrimp...
White-leg shrimp farmers in Thach Ha, Loc Ha, Cam Xuyen, Ky Anh... boldly invest in high-tech farming to ensure safety, increase productivity, and increase profits.
Along with Loc Ha, aquaculture farmers across the province have also made efforts to overcome difficulties to ensure production pace and improve income.
Le Anh Duc, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghi Xuan District, said: “Implementing the brackish water aquaculture production plan for 2023, farmers in the district have maintained 534 hectares (equal to the same period last year) to raise shrimp, crab, mullet, scad, snapper, etc. and harvested 1,401 tons of products. During the production process, farmers have focused on overcoming unfavorable factors such as weather, epidemics, water pollution, high feed prices, quality of seeds, and traders forcing down prices when selling.”

According to statistics, from the beginning of September until now (the period entering the rainy and stormy season, so it is necessary to harvest or alternate crops to raise winter crops), brackish water aquaculture farmers in Ha Tinh have harvested 2,222 tons of various products, reaching a production value of nearly 181 billion VND.
Currently, some coastal areas (especially high-tech, safe farming areas) are continuing to reinforce ponds, clean farming tanks, clean farming environments, implement measures to prevent storms and diseases, prepare water sources, contact breeds and food... to raise winter crops, have products to sell for Tet, especially shrimp and crab.

Head of the Aquaculture Management Department (Department of Fisheries, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ha Tinh) Nguyen Thi Hoai Thuy said: “Despite certain difficulties, brackish water aquaculture activities from the beginning of the year until now in our province have still reached 2,700 hectares (97% of the annual plan). Of this production area, 2,154 hectares are for shrimp farming (1,887 hectares of white-leg shrimp, the rest are for black tiger shrimp), 124 hectares for crab and fish farming, and 422 hectares for mollusks. Shrimp is identified as the main farming species, with high production value and 614 hectares are raised using high technology, 462 hectares are semi-intensive, and the rest are improved extensive or extensive farming”.
“Thanks to the strengthening of management at all levels and sectors, active production guidance, and farmers taking care of production and proactively overcoming difficulties, the brackish water aquaculture output in the province since the beginning of the year has reached nearly 8,000 tons (85% of the yearly plan), bringing in a production value of nearly 540 billion VND. Of which, the output of all kinds of shrimp reached 4,465 tons, all kinds of fish reached 250 tons, the rest were other farming objects,” Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai Thuy added.
