Purchase at the garden
These days, kumquat garden owners in Cam Ha commune, Hoi An city are focusing on caring for and pruning the branches to have the most beautiful kumquat pots to sell on the market.
With more than 10 years of experience in growing kumquat trees, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Trung (Trang Suoi village, Cam Ha commune) said that to serve the Tet market this year, his family planted 400 large and small kumquat trees. On average, each seedling costs 500,000 VND, and the investment cost for the kumquat garden is more than 800 million VND.
“Currently, more than 300 kumquat trees of the family have been purchased by traders, with prices ranging from 600,000 to 1.3 million VND. It is estimated that if all of this kumquat garden is sold, after deducting investment costs, the family will still make a profit of more than 200 million VND,” Mr. Trung shared.
Mr. Nguyen Chin, in Bau Sung block, Thanh Ha ward, Hoi An city, said that this year there was little rain and storms so the kumquat trees grew well, had beautiful fruit, few pests and diseases, but the price was 200,000 VND to 300,000 VND/pot lower than previous years.
Currently, traders in localities such as Da Nang, Thua Thien Hue, Binh Dinh have come to the gardens, set up stakes to hand over to the gardeners to continue caring for and selling during the Lunar New Year. On average, each large kumquat pot costs 2 million VND, a beautiful bonsai can cost from 5 to 7 million, even tens of millions.
Brand Enhancement
Thanh Ha Ward currently has more than 700 households specializing in growing kumquat. It is expected that this year's Tet season will sell about 55,000 kumquat bonsai pots to the market, an increase of 20,000 pots compared to last year.
Mr. Nguyen Anh, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hoi An City, said that the Farmers' Association of the city has coordinated with the Social Policy Bank to provide loans of VND80 billion to 1,000 farming households to develop flower and ornamental plant production. At the same time, the loan capital and technical guidance on planting and care will be provided to help people feel secure in production, to promote the Hoi An ornamental kumquat brand.
“This year, the scale of kumquat production in Hoi An has developed well, far exceeding that of previous years. In particular, households specializing in producing beautiful, large fruits. The locality is moving towards forming professional kumquat growing associations and encouraging people to grow organic kumquat trees to supply OCOP product owners,” said Mr. Nguyen Anh.
Mr. Mai Thanh Hung - Vice Chairman of Cam Ha Commune People's Committee said that in 2023, the whole commune has 365 households growing about 65,000 kumquat bonsai pots, an increase of about 20,000 pots compared to previous years.
“In 2022, the total revenue from kumquat trees in the commune will be about 55 billion VND. This year, traders have deposited to buy more than 70% of kumquat trees, prices are temporarily stable, but the consumption market is still slow due to the economic recession. The commune plans to organize a kumquat festival on December 12, 2023 and receive the Provincial Traditional Craft Certificate,” said Mr. Hung.
